School board discusses drug testing high schools

The Oxford School Board voted down random drug testing of students in the board's last meeting, but the board will continue to discuss the issue at the next meeting May 19. The board passed the bill for discussion and has delayed its final decision while the committee that proposed the random drug testing makes a few changes to the new policy.

UM deceased remembered at service

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at the Paris-Yates Chapel yesterday evening for the university's first memorial ceremony to honor those in the University of Mississippi community who have died during the past two years. The service is the result of Chancellor Robert Khayat's proclamation to honor the last Thursday of classes in the academic year as University Memorial Day.

Committee schedules 2 city events during week of presidential debate

The Oxford Community Presidential Debate Steering Committee continues to plan community-based activities for the upcoming presidential debate. The committee has scheduled two events for the week of the debate, a patriotic event on the Square Sept. 25 and a public viewing of the debate on the Square.

Shepard Smith to give commencement speech

Fox News anchor and former University of Mississippi student Shepherd Smith is scheduled to be the commencement speaker for the graduation ceremony May 10. "We invite nationally and internationally renowned leaders for our commencement address, and this year we are honored to bring one of our own back to campus," Chancellor Robert Khayat said.

Confederate statues see restoration

The University Greys Camp 1803 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans successfully raised $100,000 to restore the 100-year-old Confederate monuments on the Square and on the University of Mississippi Circle, said Jon Rawls, a local businessman who is involved with both organizations.

Students place in Russian essay contest

Four University of Mississippi students won top honors in the ninth annual American Council of Teachers of Russian essay competition. The competition included 723 essays from 50 universities, including Yale, Harvard and Columbia. Senior Dustin Bankston, international studies major and president of the university Russian club, won first place in the category of non-heritage speakers.

Raised in nearby Holly Springs, an Ole Miss journalism student in the late '80s, Smith has gone on to become a renowned journalist whose face is instantly recognized all over the world.

Playoff-bound men's lacrosse looks for student, University support

Many people on campus may not know, but Ole Miss has a men's lacrosse team that has experienced a myriad of success. In the team's first year as a member of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division 1, they are headed to the playoffs. Head coach John McCreery hopes a playoff run will gain his team some recognition and respect around campus as well as across the country.
