The University of Mississippi is kicking off the week of the presidential debate at 6 p.m. Sunday in front of the Lyceum.
The event will feature a welcome from ASB President Graham Purcell as well as greetings from Chancellor Robert C. Khayat and Mayor Richard Howorth.
“We’re really excited about this,” Purcell said. “We really want this to be a kick off, not only just for Ole Miss but also for the community of Oxford and the state of Mississippi.”
Senior African-American studies major Amber Gardner will sing the national anthem.
Additionally, Vice President of the Black Student Union Chris Cox will recite the UM Creed along with Megan McRaney, ASB vice president.
“We really want to encourage students to come out and help us kick off the week,” Purcell said.
“There has been so much excitement leading up to this, and this is it, this is the week that all eyes are on Mississippi.”
Tables will be set up outside the Lyceum for various campus organizations such as College Republicans, College Democrats and ASB, among others. Representatives of USpeak, an organization founded in Mississippi which aims to reduce college students’ apathy toward voting, will also be in attendance.
One of the premier events of the debate kickoff celebration will involve those who participated in the “Passport to the Debate” lottery competition.
After the ceremony, Khayat will draw the first lottery winner.
The event also features coaches from all university sports drawing names of ticket winners.
Students interested the lottery were asked to pick up a Passport to the Debate card at the Student Union.
Each debate-related event a student attended earned one stamp on their Passport for a maximum of five stamps, with each stamp representing one entry into the lottery.
Students will be able to turn in debate passports from 1-5 p.m. outside the Lyceum on Sunday.
