Here's an idea for those limited tickets to September's presidential debate in the Ford Center: Why not distribute half a dozen each to the College Democrats and College Republicans? I'd suggest giving each organization more, but every subsequent news report I hear or read mentions fewer tickets available to students than the previous one.
In the United States, race is the only topic more sensitive than religion, and because of the Deep South's history, that sensitivity only intensifies. Discussion of race often stirs intense emotion in people, especially when a person feels that he has to defend his entire race to another.
Nor do they make good citizens. In a nation that has become more and more secretive in its governmental practices since the events of Sept. 11 more than six years ago, Mississippi remains one of the most secretive states. Its public records and open meetings laws are among the worst on the books.
