Lackey describes Scruggs' bribery attempt

Judge William Coleman will make a ruling today concerning whether the members of the Scruggs Katrina Group (SKG), which consisted of three other law firms, should be punished for the bribery overture conducted by Richard "Dickie" Scruggs and others. During testimony Tuesday, Judge Henry Lackey revealed for the first time his role in catching Scruggs carry out a bribe for a favorable ruling in the fee dispute case.

City names new fire chief

The Oxford Board of Aldermen appointed Mike Hill chief of the Oxford Fire Department Tuesday night. "This is a big day for me," Hill said as he received his appointment from the board. Hill's appointment allows him to achieve a personal goal he set for himself when he interviewed with the OFD 22 years ago.

Students decorate shoes to benefit children

As part of a nationwide college tour, Shoes for Tomorrow (TOMS) will visit the Ole Miss campus Tuesday to host "Style Your Sole," an event designed to raise awareness about worldwide poverty. Every pair of shoes sold will result in a pair donated to needy children in Ethiopia, TOMS event coordinator Harper Ferguson said.

Greek Open raises money for fire dept.

The Lafayette County Fire Department will soon purchase a new squad truck to be used by one of the county's 14 stations with the funds raised through the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity's Greek Open Tennis Tournament. Fund-raising efforts, which began on March 24 and continued until April 5, raised more than $47,000, ATO Philanthropy Chair Richard Walters said.

Students feel pinch in credit market as student loan availability drops

University of Mississippi students may have trouble finding additional college funding from private student loans next fall. With increasing interest rates and tough credit checks decreasing students' approvals for funding, the private loan market will be helping fewer students this year.
