Get spring break ready

By Kelsey Dockery | The Daily Mississippian

Spring is in the air, and flowers will soon blossom— but not just in your garden.

Get ready for bold prints, loud colors and flowing fabrics because this season is about making a statement. With spring break kicking off today, here are a few essentials for your week-long vacation.

Bikini season is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about your perfect suit. If you’re not traveling to an exotic destination, let your choice in bathing suit take you there instead.

My favorite? Tribal.

The blocks of different colors in an abstract pattern are not only a great way to conjure thoughts of faraway places, but it might just catch the attention of a stranger.

Every swimsuit needs the proper accessories, so invest in pieces that will match any bathing suit.

Think neutral colors: white, black or brown. With a cover up, you don’t want something form-fitting that will stick to your sunscreen or tanning lotion, so choose one with a flowing fabric or something that strays away from your body.

Finding the right sandal for the beach is always a bit tricky.

With ordinary flip flops, you end up kicking sand all over the place.

To combat that, look for a sandal that wraps around your ankle.

A gladiator style sandal is perfect for the beach and will match your tribal print suit perfectly.

I am always a fan of skin protection, so consider buying a hat to keep your skin wrinkle-free in the future.

And not just any old baseball hat— a straw fedora or floppy hat is a stylish way to keep your skin looking radiant for years to come.

When dressing for the night out, think comfort. Tropical areas are always overly humid and skin tight fabrics don’t pair well with humidity.

You also want to try cotton so you’re not worrying about wrinkles when dancing the night away at a Mexican cantina.

Stick to a-line, bandeau, halter, empire or drop waist styles. Each of these styles are fitted around the bodice, but flow out around the waist and will flatter almost any body type.

Skirts are also an item to keep in mind for an afternoon of shopping or sight-seeing. They can be found in any style, print or color, but I suggest floral patterns.

The girly feature is perfect for this piece and essential for any spring wardrobe.

Pair with a cap sleeve tee or bright colored tank and you’re ready to hit the town.

Fashion means dressing from the top of your head to the tips of your toes— never forget about the importance of footwear.

Sandals are of course a must, any style will do. Try neon or animal print for just a touch of flair. Spring also means wedges are back in style.

The 1920s style of a straw or wooden wedge is just the ticket to finishing off an evening beach look, and they are comfortable enough to dance in or take a stroll along the boardwalk.

Wooden platforms are also an alternative to your average black pump. They add a bit of summer to an everyday outfit.

And don’t forget about nail polish.

Although often overlooked, a great polish can complete any look.

Pastel pink or purple and bright coral or turquoise are just a few ideas to polish off your spring break wardrobe.
