It has been exactly one month since the judicial council at the University of Mississippi first met regarding an incident involving the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After a month-long break and a week to review the fraternity’s appeal, the final ruling has been made.

The fraternity was found in violation of hazing, registration of activities and alcohol-related charges.

The charges came from a police report involving the abuse of alcohol, according to Judicial Council Chairman Courtney Pearson.

I feel somewhat strange admitting it, but I have fallen head over heels for this town. I have lived in a lot of places and met a lot of people, thanks to my overly enthusiastic mother who makes friends with every thing that has the ability to breathe, her classic victim being the woman standing behind her in the grocery store. Just ask artist, Zach Tutor, but had she not stormed into Square Books and antagonized the poor guy, I never would have known about Supersonic Electronic, or the amazing art it held.

When the average person thinks of the University of Mississippi, several things come to mind including its rich tradition in arts and literature, beautiful people, campus and, of course, the Greek scene.
Ranked as one of the top five greek schools in the nation, but there is more than just the infamous partying brought forth by popular culture when it comes to the Greek system, as it has raised over $500,000 for philanthropies over the past two years.

Are two professors really better than one?

Sometimes, good things come in pairs. Shoes, cookies and good movie sequels are things that we would consider normal when they come in pairs. What about college professors teaching the same course?

Before the start of this semester, I enrolled in a course that was dual-taught by two very qualified professors. I had been warned about these dual-taught courses, but I decided that the concept of having two professors teach the same course was very logical.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Sororities and fraternities give back to the Oxford community in a non-traditional way.

Along with game days and fall boots, sorority and fraternity swap season has begun.  For all the non-Greeks out there, swaps, also known as mixers or date parties, consist of a fraternity and a sorority coming together for a themed party at a local Oxford venue, usually a bar on the Square.

There are over 30 sororities and fraternities on the University of Mississippi campus, and most plan swaps at least a few times a semester.

Picture this: Student A has a class, required by her major, for which she spends an excessive amount of time working. Hours of homework here. Cram session here, cram session there. After all of the work she put into this class, she finishes with a 93.

That, my friend, is a very good grade. The only problem is that her final letter grade has a little minus sign next to it. That minus sign means the difference between a 4.0 and a 3.7 for the hours involved with that class.

Suddenly, her immense effort is worth a lot less.

Ole Miss students are generally known for being top partiers, having an involved Greek life and frequenting bars.

But two University of Mississippi students, Kristin Volker and Abby Olivier, are adding something else to that title: charitable.

Volker, a sophomore, and Olivier, a senior, have established the Ole Miss chapter of ONE, a non-partisan activist group that works toward bringing awareness to the hardships faced in Africa.

Jane Smith waited anxiously to hear the good news. She knew that she would get into the sorority of her dreams. She had to. Her mom, her aunt and even her grandmother had all been Delta Gamma sorority members when they were students at the University of Mississippi. Jane knew she must continue the legacy.

I am lucky because I am one of the few women on this campus who have had the opportunity to experience every side of the Pan-Hellenic recruitment process as an undergraduate.
As a freshman, I was the naïve Potential New Member (PNM) who was afraid of being released. I was the sophomore in-house active creeping on the top of the door stack, screaming at the top of my lungs.

I joined the Greek system here with a certain sense of reluctance, unsure of what my commitment to a fraternity would mean.

However, in the two years I was in a fraternity, I met many of my closest friends and grew as a person through countless positive experiences. This is why I was so frustrated by what I saw and heard in my first recruitment process as a member this past fall. It might be because I am so naive that I never considered why fraternities and sororities are so disproportionately white.

Nothing is more prominent at Ole Miss than the stereotype.

The Greeks. The ignorant. The spoiled. The partiers. The conservatives. The racists.

The list goes on and on. Most are based in some form of truth, some are extreme exaggerations, and none are actually true.

African-American Greek organizations have come a long way in the past several years but on some college campuses their community service and philanthropy go unnoticed. At the University of Mississippi, many of the African-American sororities and fraternities seem to mostly fly under the radar, no matter how many good deeds they do.

There's a story on every corner.

That's what Fox News anchor Shepard Smith told a class of eleven Ole Miss journalism students during a recent class session.

The students are in New York City for the second week of a May intersession course.

He challenged the class to go out with a camera and find a story, report, write and edit the piece in about four hours.

This is what Lillian Askins and Ashley Barnett put together.
