Just 48 hours after losing a heartbreaker to Florida, the Ole Miss men’s basketball team returned to the court to host the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Rebels (14-7, 4-3 SEC) led for much of the game, but the Gamecocks (9-11, 1-5 SEC) refused to go away, knocking down shot after shot to stay in the game.

The start of last night’s game between the Ole Miss Rebels and 13th-ranked Florida Gators could not have gone any better for the Rebels. After Florida scored the game’s first basket, Ole Miss went on a 20-2 run to take a 16-point lead behind the hot shooting of senior Terrance Henry and junior Nick Williams. After going into halftime with a 10-point deficit, however, the Gators stormed back and outscored the Rebels 36-22 in the second half to escape with a 64-60 win.

There is a saying that rivalry games bring out the best in players. Reggie Buckner and the Ole Miss faithful will not disagree with that statement after seeing the junior from Memphis score a career-high 19 points and grab a game-high 15 rebounds as Ole Miss upset No. 15 Mississippi State 75-68 win on Wednesday night.

Freshman guard Maurice Aniefiok is a long way from home. Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, Aniefiok played soccer growing up before ever picking up a basketball. From that day on, though, Aniefiok knew basketball was his ticket in life. He soon realized, however, that he needed to come to America to take his skills to the next level.

For the offensive-minded basketball fan, Friday’s season opener between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks was not an instant classic.

Nevertheless, the Rebels (1-0) started the season with a 60-38 win over the Warhawks (0-1). The 38 point loss was the lowest scoring output allowed under head coach Andy Kennedy.

In a word, last year was a disappointment for Ole Miss athletics.

From the start, with a 49-48 double-overtime loss to Jacksonville State, Rebel fans left stadiums and arenas on this campus and across the South shaking their heads in unison. There’s enough blame to go around, from the coaches to the players to the fans, but it’s time to move on. With the start of 2011, there is reason for optimism.
