The Internet was abuzz earlier this week over a photo taken of Lindsay Lohan’s teeth. They were, in a word, disgusting.

They were not the teeth of a 25-year-old fading Hollywood starlet, but the teeth of a meth-addicted “Deliverance” extra. While the teeth photo seen around the Internet was troubling, what was even more troubling and less-widely publicized was that LiLo had once again been charged with violating her probation and could face up to 18 months in jail this time around.

When most people think of studying abroad, they think of traveling to new and exciting places, experiencing a different culture and taking serious advantage of lower legal drinking ages. For the vast majority of college students who participate in study abroad programs, they accomplish exactly that and get an educational experience out of the process. However, Amanda Knox had quite a different experience.

I am writing in regard to Heather Applewhite’s article on the Freedom Riders’ appearance published in the April 14 edition of the DM.

Dear Editor,
I am writing in regard to Heather Applewhite’s article on the Freedom Riders’ appearance published in the April 14 edition of the DM.

I was appalled when I read the first lines of Ms. Applewhite’s article. Yes, I understand that when one writes an article she needs an opener that will intrigue audiences and pull them in, but beginning with “Three men with extensive criminal records spoke at the Overby Center on Wednesday” was certainly not the best choice to make, especially in this instance.

Some of these men fought in the Vietnam War. When they returned home, they continued fighting– this time a battle for equal rights. Their work led them to be known as the Freedom Riders, and led them to be invited to speak about their experiences during the Civil Rights movement.

Eric Etheridge, author of Breach of Peace, asked the questions, while the others spoke about their experiences as rebellious teenagers during the era of Civil Rights.
