Donations from faculty and students across campus are a huge reason why the program has been so successful.

Since 1970, the Lafayette County chapter of United Way has found agencies that are serving people then raises money for them to help their cause.

Thanks in large part to on-campus events, United Way raised $10,000 more than it did last year.

The University of Mississippi has seen graduate student enrollment across all programs increase approximately 20 percent since 2000, according to Mary Harrington, director of institutional research and assessment.

Austin Miller: What are your overall thoughts on this year’s Ole Miss recruiting class?

Keith Niebuhr: It’s always difficult when you have a new staff come in and have that kind of turnover. They lost some crucial time from when it was known that Nutt wasn’t going to be back, to the time the new staff was put into place. This group did a good job, first and foremost, of securing the recruits they already had. That’s the key. So you’re almost starting from scratch. Then they went out and have gotten a few more guys. It’s not huge in numbers, but it’s high in quality. And now they land Channing Ward, which was huge. That’s a big prize in Mississippi, so that’s significant.

In response to the DM’s recent article on the student green fee initiative, I think it’s important to clarify a few statements that were made in the article.

To the Editor:

In response to the DM’s recent article on the student green fee initiative, I think it’s important to clarify a few statements that were made in the article.  First, I want to reiterate that the grassroots effort to implement a green fee is entirely a student-led initiative.  The Office of Sustainability supports the idea of a green fee, but the ideas generated and the projects chosen should be guided by the students.

Students come to the University of Mississippi from all over the state and the country, but what makes Ole Miss unique is the large number of international students that call Ole Miss home.

This year alone, an estimated 600-650 international students attend Ole Miss. These numbers prompt investigation into what is attracting international students to the small town of Oxford.

Arpi Grigoryan, an international studies freshman from Armenia, said Ole Miss had a good reputation in her home country.

Jane Smith waited anxiously to hear the good news. She knew that she would get into the sorority of her dreams. She had to. Her mom, her aunt and even her grandmother had all been Delta Gamma sorority members when they were students at the University of Mississippi. Jane knew she must continue the legacy.

Angel Ranch, a house that has been used as a shelter for kids since 2006, has shut down due to lack of funding.
“I am disappointed,” Angel Ranch executive director Sue Turner said. “I am very disappointed that the community at large did not provide support to sustain a shelter for foster children.”
The Angel Ranch, a public, non-profit charity, has struggled over the past year. In June 2011, the ranch stopped accepting abused children, and as of Aug. 13, the ranch was no longer listed as a non-profit organization.

Leadership is the key to what makes a group of people successful.

Without effective leadership, the group is bound for failure. An effective leader must power through adversity to make the group as successful as possible. Ole Miss is going through tough times right now. We will get through it if not for one reason: we have very capable leaders that know exactly what they are doing.

NewsWatch takes a look at recruitment from several angles.

Recruitment starts tonight for those hoping to become involved in a fraternity or sorority at Ole Miss.  NewsWatch reporters John Kaiser and Dana Ainsworth take an in depth look at rush week asking questions about the record number of participants and whether Ole Miss should add a new sorority and taking to local business owners about preparations for the week.

As humans, we naturally take sides on certain things.

We learn this profound characteristic as children. We talk back to our parents when we do not agree with something they tell us to do. We get in fights with our siblings when we want something that they have. Here at Ole Miss, especially right now, we know a little bit about conflicting parties involved in a pretty significant occurrence.

I started my freshman year not knowing what to expect exactly when people talked about the “Ole Miss experience.”

The majority of my family attended college elsewhere, and many of these family members had very strong, albeit extremely biased, opinions about the university. Despite growing up in Mississippi, I simply wasn’t all that familiar with Ole Miss, having had no personal experiences here.

Forty-nine years ago today, the University of Mississippi was going through the worst of times. James Meredith had just been admitted to the university, causing tension that we as students in this day and age cannot possibly imagine.

Trailing 4-0, McCalla scored her second goal of the year for Ole Miss in the 68th minute off an assist from Souza while Souza scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year in the 81st minute off an assist from McCalla.

Fellow students:

Welcome back to campus, and Hotty Toddy on the Rebels’ first win of the season.

There are some truly great events happening on this campus, and I am honored to serve as your Associated Student Body treasurer. I am excited to announce that the application for ASB funding is now open to all student organizations on campus.
