In President Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address, he carried a theme through the speech, which earned him several standing ovations and should have earned whoever wrote that speech a significant raise.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

Who's leading the GOP packing?

It’s not too early to conclude that Mitt Romney is will be the eventual Republican nominee for President of the United States.

For the more than 36 million Americans who carry federal student loan debt, totaling more than one trillion dollars, President Barack Obama’s new plan could significantly lighten the heavy burden of debt for those who qualify.

For the more than 36 million Americans who carry federal student loan debt, totaling more than one trillion dollars, President Barack Obama’s new plan could significantly lighten the heavy burden of debt for those who qualify.

The new Obama plan to help alleviate college student loan debt might not be much help to current students, with loan consolidation not starting until 2012 and loan debt repayments being lowered to 10 percent from 15 percent in 2014.

Obama’s announcement is irrelevant for a reason – it’s too good to be true.

Here in Oxford, we’re stretched thin with events and activities vying for our time and attention.

Jerrell Powe just signed on to the onslaught of the Forward Rebels.

We’re more stressed out about midterms than Boone must be about his job, and apparently this thing called a “Green Fund” should be important to us, too.

If you’re not paying careful attention, you’d barely notice that Obama said he’s bringing our troops home from Iraq.

For those unaware of recent events, Sept. 30 a terrorist died in Yemen, killed by a predator drone on the order of President Barack Obama.

Normally this wouldn’t really register with us; as a society we’ve become desensitized to the loss of life.  Plus, after all, this was one of the bad guys – why do we care?  Because the terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki, was a United States citizen.

A very compelling argument can be made against this decision. Does the government have the right to kill its citizens?

I like to label myself a pacifist. I believe that violence should not be used, regardless of the circumstance because we as humans have the ability to reason.
We can rationalize. We have the intelligence to figure out how to cooperate with one another. Bar fights do not solve problems. Street shootings do not offer solutions.
However, what happens when the individual on the other side believes violence is the solution? What if a man has sworn to shed innocent blood? Is it permissible to resort to violence in order to prevent tragedy?

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor released a memo on the upcoming jobs agenda on Aug. 29.

His memo mentioned two major areas the House would focus on when passing legislation for job creation.

These two categories were the “Repeal of job-destroying regulations to create middle-class jobs,” and “Immediate tax relief to create middle class jobs.” These seem like reasonable categories, even if they were strongly worded.

Hurricane Irene pummelled the Eastern seaboard recently, especially damaging New England states like Vermont.

Ron Paul claimed the United States has no need for FEMA in the wake of this disaster, saying that the federal government does more harm than good when meddling in states’ affairs.

This statement from the presidential contender especially drew criticism from the Left and provided yet another reason for people to call him crazy.

Poise, charisma, substance and electability.

These are four essential qualities any successful presidential candidate must have. In the primary for the 2012 Republican nomination of president, only one candidate has these attributes. That candidate is former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney.

President Barack Obama is holding the first-ever town hall Q&A session with Americans via the social network Twitter on July 6.

I for one, am very interested in the leader of our country’s attempt at intertwining social networking with government business. I don’t think I have any real problems with it; after all, the president held a Facebook town hall in April and successfully used the site during his 2008 campaign.

In an amazing or, alternatively, depressing 33 to 29 vote, marriage equality was voted for in the New York State Senate and nearly immediately signed into law by Gov. Mario Cuomo. No matter how narrow the victory, the battle has been won in New York and thanks to an unusually high population density in states where gay marriage is now legal, roughly half of the nation has the right to marry someone of the same gender now.

New York single-handedly determined this column’s topic for the week.

There are currently over a dozen senior economic and regulatory positions that have opened up since November of last year that have yet to be filled. There is only one reason why this has happened: Any nomination from the Obama administration must be approved by the Senate. Coincidentally enough, last November was when Republicans took the super-majority in the Senate away from Democrats.

Barack Obama became the first American president to formally endorse a plan to return Israel to its 1967 borders, before the Middle East War. Based on an opinion poll the Wall Street Journal, about 68 percent of Americans disagree with the president’s plan.

“I just can’t wrap my mind around what I was a part of.”

Those are the words of Ole Miss student Lauryn DuValle who still can't believe she deserves part of the credit for President Barack Obama's visit to Memphis on Monday.

He was there to deliver the keynote address for 155 graduating seniors from Booker T. Washington (BTW) High School.

Late Sunday night, President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. armed forces. He called the assassination the greatest achievement made thus far in the War on Terror.

“The world is safer. It is a better place because of the death of Osama bin Laden,” Obama said in his address to the nation.

Bin Laden’s death marks the end of a decade-long manhunt that began shortly after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Being frustrated with something and knowing that you are not living up to your potential are two of the worst feelings a human being can experience. Frustration occurs all too often — relationships, politics and life in general is frustrating. Living up to one’s potential is something that is pleasing and rewarding, so when one fails to do so, it takes a toll on the strongest of minds. This week, I experienced both of these horrible feelings when I should have been experiencing great joy and pride.

Let’s play a game.

The rules are simple: I ask you a few questions about political policy, and you select which president enacted each one.

Your options for each question are “G.W. Bush,” “Obama” or “both.”

First, which president proposed a record-breaking budget to Congress of more than $3 trillion dollars and an expensive health care bill during his presidency?

Barack Obama is respected for his scholarly knowledge of the Constitution, but apparently our nation’s founding document is nothing more than a piece of paper to the man.

Barack Obama is respected for his scholarly knowledge of the Constitution, but apparently our nation’s founding document is nothing more than a piece of paper to the man.

Our president blatantly ignores the backbone of American law to serve an agenda destroying the country as we know it. Obama’s negligence with our sovereignty and liberty is reason to enrage both republicans and democrats, and for that matter, anyone else who claims to have an ounce of patriotism.
