For the second day in a row, head coach Houston Nutt was pleased with his team’s performance on the practice fields.

“We had another good one,” Nutt said of Wednesday’s practice. “We have had two really good back-to-back days. I was excited about them pushing through it today, when it got a little hotter than it has the last two days.”

Nutt said that he is happy to see some of the older players pushing the freshmen.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Arnett Moultrie scored 18 points, Dee Bost dished a career-high 13 assists and No. 20 Mississippi State easily beat rival Mississippi 70-60 on Thursday night.
It was another efficient performance for the 6-foot-11 Moultrie, who was 9 of 14 from the field. Moultrie had plenty of easy looks thanks to several nice passes from Bost, who had eight assists in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 40-27 lead.
The 6-foot-2 senior’s 13 assists were the most by an SEC player this season.

We are a family at Ole Miss. Some Mississippians would argue that the state of Mississippi is like a family too. In the wake of arguments between Ole Miss and Mississippi State fans on social media outlets about anything imaginable, I thought about some comparisons between the state universities and a family.

As Ole Miss fans, we have always considered ourselves the big brother in the family. Mississippi State is the little brother that pesters us until we give in.

Transition classes are always tough. In Houston Nutt’s first class at Ole Miss, he signed 31 players, many of whom never contributed or qualified.

For new Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, his transition class is a little bit different. The Rebels signed only 13 players on signing day but added four junior college players in December and two greyshirts from last year’s class.

Now that National Signing Day has come and gone, recruiting junkies only have one thing left to do: wonder.

Those wonderers will sit around and ask themselves if Hugh Freeze’s recruiting class was good enough or if it will be something that ruins his career at Ole Miss, much like it did Houston Nutt.

In less than two months after being introduced as the new head football coach, Hugh Freeze put together a 19-player recruiting class, including 13 who signed their National Letters of Intent yesterday. He held together much of this year’s class despite the coaching change and made a splash with the additions of Aberdeen defensive end Channing Ward and East Mississippi Community College quarterback Bo Wallace, who signed during the junior college transfer signing period. All things considered, Freeze was pleased with his first recruiting class and is looking forward to the future.

Monday night at Irie on the Square, Lafayette High School quarterback and Oxford native Jeremy Liggins stood up and faced a capacity crowd with five helmets of college teams on the table. Those five helmets represented Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. Quickly, Liggins reached out and grabbed the LSU helmet, saying simply, “Go Tigers, baby.”

For many, the thought of Liggins choosing a school other than Ole Miss on the Oxford Square seemed strange, but the 6’4,” 275-pound quarterback said that wasn’t really the case.

Greyshirting

A greyshirt is when a recruit delays his enrollment for a semester so his eligibility clock doesn’t start until January of the next year. The player can take less than a full load of classes and work out but can’t practice or play with the team. It is used by schools to create more room to sign players when scholarships are tight.

The start of last night’s game between the Ole Miss Rebels and 13th-ranked Florida Gators could not have gone any better for the Rebels. After Florida scored the game’s first basket, Ole Miss went on a 20-2 run to take a 16-point lead behind the hot shooting of senior Terrance Henry and junior Nick Williams. After going into halftime with a 10-point deficit, however, the Gators stormed back and outscored the Rebels 36-22 in the second half to escape with a 64-60 win.
