Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech nearly 49 years ago, rallying over 200,000 civil rights supporters in Washington, D.C., during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Just over a week ago, Kelly Shannon and a group of University of Mississippi students were recognized for their efforts, this time through community service in King’s name.
King’s legacy lives on through Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and observed as far away as Hiroshima.

 African-American Greek organizations have come a long way in the past several years but on some college campuses their community service and philanthropy go unnoticed. At the University of Mississippi, many of the African-American sororities and fraternities seem to mostly fly under the radar, no matter how many good deeds they do.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is comprised of nine African-American Greek organizations, four of which are sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho.

Although all four organizations are different, each sorority advocates service, scholastic achievement, sisterhood and leadership.

The University of Mississippi Museum is hosting an exhibit on African American soldiers in World War II and their impact on the civil rights movement.

The University of Mississippi Museum is hosting an exhibit on African American soldiers in World War II and their impact on the civil rights movement.

The exhibit in the Skipwith Gallery includes original photographs, prints and cartoons demonstrating the impact of African Americans in Germany during the war.

Placed chronologically on the walls, the pieces take viewers through history, starting with World War II and moving through several major events of the civil rights movement.

Racial issues are always a topic of great controversy at Ole Miss.

Whether you admit it or just avoid the situation in general is up to each individual, but there are definitely still some racial issues that are not addressed on our campus, in the South and across the country.

We all know about the Civil Rights era and what our school went through during those times. James Meredith is one of the most well-known alumni to ever graduate from this University.
