Burdette committed to Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State and switched to Ole Miss in late January. Originally a running back, he was forced to play quarterback as a senior. He rushed for over 1,200 yards as a junior at the running back position. Listed as an athlete, he could play in the defensive secondary or at running back for the Rebels.

Strong opinions were expressed concerning Initiative 26 after the results were announced, with many people upset and others relieved.

This is the first in a four-part series highlighting important issues that will be on Tuesday’s ballot. This article will deal with Intiative 31 which talks about Eminent Domain. Tomorrow will deal with Initiative 27, which talks about Voter Identification.

 

While some people may not know or understand eminent domain laws in Mississippi, for others it is a huge deal.  

“As of now, eminent domain allows government to take private property from people who are not willing to sell their land directly to the private corporation and use it as economic development,” Cy Rosenblatt, political science professor, said.

People for this initiative feel like the government should not be able to take private land and hand it over to private corporations.

The university offers assistance to those students who register with Student Disability Services.

 

Adam Brown was born with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects his left arm and leg.  

“I’ve had it for 28 years, well, 27 and some odd months,” he said. “Basically I use my walker and a wheelchair. But I only use my wheelchair if I have to go a long way.”

But this has not stopped Brown from going to college — two colleges, in fact. 

A transfer from Mississippi State University, Brown is now a senior journalism major at the University of Mississippi.

Jonas Lutjen, a junior at Ole Miss, has dealt with diabetes since he was 3 years old. He must monitor what he eats, get plenty of exercise and keep track of his blood sugar levels in order to remain healthy and fight off other potential health problems.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four Ole Miss Rebels were recognized Thursday with their selection to the 2011 All-Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Preseason Football Team, including first-team honoree Bradley Sowell.

A senior from Hernando, Miss., Sowell was chosen as an offensive lineman on the preseason first team, while fellow tackle Bobby Massie, of Lynchburg, Va., was named to the third team. Senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett, of Hahnville, La., was selected to the coaches’ second unit along with junior punter Tyler Campbell of Little Rock, Ark.

In the fall of 1962, the University of Mississippi was going through one of the most important transitional phases in its long history, and Sidna Brower Mitchell, the editor-in-chief of The Mississippian, got to witness it first hand. 

Fifty years later, Mitchell is donating to the Ole Miss library many of her letters and souvenirs from her time at the paper.

Jason Little, chief operating officer for the Memphis-based Baptist Health Care System, announced that Baptist will not use the land purchased in February by Baptist affiliate Black Bear Land Co., located west of Oxford on Mississippi Highway 6.

Little said Baptist is committed to the plan to build within the city limits.

Terry Wooten is next in the line of the many Mississippi journalists to receive the Samuel Talbert Silver Em Award today from the University of Mississippi.

Wooten, a Pontotoc native who studied journalism at the University of Mississippi, is the editor-in-chief of Kitco News, based in New York. He will be the 52nd winner of the award.

What began as a hobby for Patsy Engelhard less than two years ago has turned into a passion and a thriving business over the course of seven months.

Engelhard, owner of Knit1, a yarn shop located behind the Square, said that about a year and a half ago an interest in the hobby developed into a passion over the course of just 24 hours.  

“Four months after I lost my job, my sister said ‘Why don’t you try this?’ and handed me a pair of knitting needles,” she said. “And I just fell in love with it.”

When University of Mississippi Dean of Students Sparky Reardon first heard the idea to feed thousands of Kenyan children, he said he was skeptical.

But more than 142,000 meals were packed on Saturday at the first Ole Miss “Feed the Hunger” Pack-A-Thon, a mission to pack and send meals to starving children in Nairobi, Kenya. The event was organized by Ole Miss student Mary Katherine Perry.

While University of Mississippi students may go to class, some admit that they are not showing up prepared, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement.

The survey measures levels of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences and a supportive campus environment. These five areas include 22 different objectives.

Ole Miss’s average score in the survey was 2.6.

FNC Park will soon have a new bicycle moto-cross, or BMX, park.

The exact start date of the BMX addition is uncertain. Brad Freeman, planning and marketing director at FNC, said he hopes to get a bid process started so the work on the park can begin sometime this spring.

“It is really too early to say since we haven’t let bids out, but hopefully we can get the bids out and approved by April or May with work started shortly thereafter,” Freeman said.

“There is a process that we have to follow.”

The city of Oxford, Lafayette County and the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi reached an understanding, which will allow the hospital to buy out its lease, giving them ownership of the current hospital building.

The memorandum is more formal than a verbal understanding, but more negotiations remain before any legal documents will be signed.

Firehouse Subs is opening its very first location in Oxford.

Chris Stephenson, franchisee and general manager of the Oxford branch, said the restaurant is scheduled to have a soft opening Feb. 21.

An Ole Miss graduate, Stephenson said the first time he ate Firehouse Subs, he knew there was no other sandwich for him. He jumped at the opportunity to open a location in the town of his alma mater.
