The Ole Miss student body seems to have missed Dexter McCluster’s plea to not text and drive.

A recent poll conducted by The Daily Mississippian found that nearly half of all respondents text while driving, an additional 24 percent only text at stop lights and another 24 percent talk on the phone but don’t text. Only 6 percent of those polled do not use a cell phone at all while driving. There were 123 respondents to the poll.

When senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis were ruled out for this past Saturday’s game against Southern Illinois, sophomore running back Jeff Scott knew he was going to get his shot.

He responded with what became his best game as an Ole Miss Rebel, rushing for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while also returning a punt for a touchdown.

Scott racked up over 200 total yards for the second time in his career, the first coming last season against LSU.

The names Chris Warren, Reginald Buckner, Kayla Melson and Courtney Marbra may not ring many bells.

The names Chris Warren, Reginald Buckner, Kayla Melson and Courtney Marbra may not ring many bells.

However, not a soul is confused when the names Michael Oher, Dexter McCluster, Archie Manning or Jeremiah Masoli are mentioned. Many people on campus claim to be a football trivia star.

How is it that we know the stars of our football teams, past and present, yet we can’t name more than a handful of the Rebel basketball legacies?

The 2010 Ole Miss football season has been difficult to put into words; when readers ask me why I’ve quit writing about the Rebels this fall I respond: “I ran out of nice things to say.”

1. Ole Miss 31 Florida 30, 2008: In his first year at Ole Miss, Houston Nutt needed a “signature win” to help the Rebels – downtrodden under former coach Ed Orgeron – gain confidence. No one could have guessed this breakthrough would come against the mighty Florida Gators, especially in Gainesville. But the upstart Rebels got enough big plays from Jevan Snead, Shay Hodge and Dexter McCluster to keep things close.

Going into the season, all the focus was on who wasn’t in the Rebels backfield, not on who was. Fact is, Dexter McCluster is not coming back, but by no means is the Rebel backfield bare.

Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville wasn’t devoid of offense for Ole Miss, but for the first time in four years, Dexter McCluster wasn’t dressed in red and blue.

No electrifying touchdown runs, no quick receptions turned big plays and no Wild Rebel.

Now that McCluster is playing in the National Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs, junior running back Brandon Bolden again finds himself as the starter in the Ole Miss backfield.

Despite the loss of two-year starter Jevan Snead, the Rebels may just end up with improved passing numbers from last year. While Snead did throw for 2,632 yards last season, he only completed 54.4 percent of his passes and offset 20 touchdowns with 20 interceptions.
