Former Unviersity of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat survived a scare over the holiday season.
Khayat was rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford on Dec. 16 for what was initially treated as a life-threatening situation.
Doctors feared it was a heart problem, but then moved their diagnosis to a potential blood clot.
After a few days, doctors began treating Khayat for pneumonia and kept him in the Intensive Care Unit for observation.

The funeral for the three University of Mississippi students who died in a car crash Sunday morning is set for Wednesday morning.

Samuel Clayton Kelly, 18, Charles Walker Kelly, 19, and Bryant Mason Wilbanks, 19, all of Madison, died in a car accident Sunday while on their way back to school after a weekend trip home, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed yesterday afternoon that three Ole Miss students died in a one-car accident early Sunday morning. 

The crash happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 55 just north of Jackson. 

Trooper Tony Dunn told WAPT of Jackson that a 2009 Infiniti was traveling north on I-55 when it veered into the median at state Highway 35. The vehicle left the median, falling through the overpass, and landed upside down on Highway 35.

“The UM-led consortium, which includes scientists from 14 research institutions, will examine the effects of hydrocarbons on a deep-water ecosystem,” said Ray Highsmith, lead investigator on the study.

SARDIS, Miss. (AP) — An elderly woman and a baby were killed after a massive tree fell on their camper as a storm with high winds battered Panola County.

Authorities tell The Commercial Appeal the woman and child, who have not been identified, were inside the camper at the Oak Grove campground at Sardis Lake off Mississippi Highway 315 when the tree fell late Monday afternoon, trapping the two inside the camper.

Obesity rates in Mississippi, specifically Lafayette County, are high and have health professionals concerned for the well being of the state. 

Trend data gathered by the Center for Disease Control in 2009 shows that 35.4 percent of Mississippi is obese. Another 34.9 percent are overweight and are at risk for obesity.

The small town of Smithville, Miss. can be best described as an area of vast destruction.

On April 27, a deadly storm barreled through much of North Mississippi and Alabama, producing tornadoes and leaving virtually nothing in its path.

Although that tornado devastated the town over two weeks ago, there is a silver lining in the wake of the disaster. This massive destruction has brought together volunteers from all over the nation donating supplies and helping those in need who lost everything.

In his opening remarks, Patterson noted the damage caused by the storm systems of the previous week and expressed sympathy for the death of city employee, Kenneth Mullin, who was killed in a car accident on Thursday, April 28.
