Pitchers:

While there is still a lot to be determined in this young pitching staff, one thing is clear: there is depth. The weekend starters are not yet set, but it looks as though freshman Bobby Wahl and senior R.J. Hively will take the hill on Fridays and Saturdays, respectively, for the Rebels. The Sunday spot seems to be down to three guys, but it’s anyone’s battle at the start of spring practice.

“Coach (Mike Bianco) has said that whoever performs the best is going to get the weekend spots, so we’ll see what happens,” Wahl said.

Sophomore Mike Mayers may have a slight lead at the moment with a season of SEC experience under his belt. However, freshmen Josh Laxer and Hawtin Buchanan, as well as juniors Tanner Bailey and Dylan Chavez, are right there in the mix. Look for Mayers to take the Sunday spot to start the season with two of the other four pitchers to fill the mid-week spots.

“(Mayers’) slider is something he’s worked on since last year,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “I think it’s just normal progression. He pitched over 50 innings last season, which is a ton for a freshman. The slider is better, but I think he’s better all around.”

Junior Brett Huber will be counted on in the late innings of the game and fill the closer’s role as he did his freshman year.

“Right now, I’m just working on commanding the strike zone and stuff like that,” Huber said. “I’m just working on being more consistent out there. Last year I had some problems with that.”

The Oxford Board of Aldermen and the University of Mississippi have initiated updates to the Oxford-University Transit system in the past few weeks. Along with blue, red, yellow and green lines, a purple line will be added to the mix, creating a Saturday route.
This new purple line will accommodate a very specific, growing issue that has been voiced and observed within Oxford: some transit-dependent people have trouble traveling around Oxford on the weekend when the green and yellow lines do not run.

Just how bad are the state's reading scores?

For quite some time, billboards across Mississippi have read, “Our children can’t read: ippississiM.”

It is difficult for many to imagine living in a world without the ability to read.

Lacking this ability has tremendous and adverse effects on individuals who seek to effectively communicate with friends, colleagues and family.

As Associated Student Body attorney general Evan Kirkham stood on the top step of the Lyceum for the third time to make an announcement about the results of Miss Ole Miss, the two remaining campaigns stood by in anticipation, ready for the whole process to be over.

The moment Kirckham announced Mary Alex Street was the victor, the air turned to a mixture of excitement from Street’s campaign, disappointment from Emily Monsour’s side and an overall sigh of relief that everything was finally over.

Kennedy excited to get started Friday

Ole Miss men’s basketball head coach Andy Kennedy met with the media Thursday afternoon, as the team prepares to begin the season with its first official practice Friday.

The Rebels lost their two top scorers in Chris Warren and Zach Graham, but Kennedy is excited with what he has seen from his team this offseason and looking forward to seeing where this team can go in 2011-12.

With the 38-28 win over Fresno State nearly two weeks ago, the Rebels not only got a much-needed win, but they also found themselves a new quarterback in junior Randall Mackey.

Mackey, who completed 8 of 18 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown against the Bulldogs of Fresno State, managed to light a fire under a stagnant offense that struggled through the first few weeks of the season.

This year saw the largest recruitment in the history of the University of Mississippi, according to the Greek Life office.

While Oxford may be known for the thousands of students the University of Mississippi attracts, the steps required to achieve higher learning are not overlooked.
Oxford School District’s 2011 enrollment summary noted that the area is host to 3,733 students, ranging from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. Despite growing enrollment, however, Interim Superintendent Brian Harvey said the schools do not offer a tutoring service but allow after-school tutoring opportunities on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tonight the Oxford Art Crawl is bringing together art and culture, featuring unique works of art from St. Louis, Ocean Springs and University of Mississippi art students.
The art shows change every month. Wayne Andrews, the executive director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, said a record-setting gallery show is premiering at the Powerhouse at 6 p.m., an hour before the Art Crawl starts. The show, by Katherine Rhodes Fields, mixes parody and 1970s images from Playboy magazine with food and photography that can be scratched and sniffed.

Lee makes changes

After taking Ole Miss nearly two full games before their offense saw the end zone for the first time against a FBS opponent, the Rebels hit the playbook this week, but this time to take out plays.

“I think we just cut out 30 percent of our plays and eliminated one protection totally,” first-year offensive coordinator David Lee said after Tuesday’s practice.

The past month and a half for former Ole Miss standout pitcher Drew Pomeranz has been hectic, to say the least. Despite the added stress, he made his major league debut in professional baseball.

Pomeranz, who was drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft as the fifth overall pick by the Cleveland Indians, spent most of the 2011 season in the Indians’ minor league system.

However, a mid-season trade changed everything for the Collierville, Tenn., native.

While many students spent their summers getting some rest and relaxation, some chose to mix their fun in with preparing for the future.
Come fall, three students talked to The Daily Mississippian about it.
Alise Darnell chose to spend half of the summer in school and the other half out of the country. Chris Presley remained in Oxford all summer doing lab research and school. Erika Watson left Oxford as soon as spring semester was finished and went north to spend the summer with a bunch of girls.

When the 2011-12 Ole Miss men’s basketball team takes the court in November, it will do so after a large shake up on the coaching staff and on the roster.

Andy Kennedy enters his sixth season as head coach at Ole Miss and feels like the turnover will be good.

“From a coaching standpoint, we had a big shake up this offseason,” Kennedy said last week. “We have 13 guys on the roster with seven getting experience last year.”

Ole Miss begins Southeastern Conference play Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt, and starting junior quarterback Zack Stoudt couldn’t be more excited.
During his recruitment when he was at Iowa Western Community College, Stoudt cited playing in the SEC as one of the reasons he chose the Rebels.

“That was the ultimate deciding factor,” Stoudt said. “I told Kansas I just couldn’t pass up playing in the SEC.
