Austin Miller: What do you think the Ole Miss football season to this point?

September 27, 2011

With a few days of reflection, commentary on Tuesday’s Internet outage.

It is approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday when I notice the Internet connection at the Student Media Center is down. I ask the newsroom, and learn that this is a campus-wide problem.

“Let me tweet that,” I say. Of course, I then remember I’m in the Dark Ages with my cell phone and the Internet is down, so I scratch that idea.

Thirty minutes later, I get the RebAlert letting me know that the problem is with AT&T in Jackson.

The Daily Mississippian sports editor Austin Miller spoke with ESPN senior writer Pat Forde via e-mail about the state of the Ole Miss football program and the importance of Saturday’s Ole Miss-Georgia game for both teams and coaches. His thoughts below:

Austin Miller: What is the outside, the national perception after Ole Miss' loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday?

September 19, 2011

Dear Editor,

It seems like everyone is talking about the Ole Miss loss to Vanderbilt.

First of all, I know we lost.

We lost 30-7.

We lost to Vanderbilt.

In response to Trenton Winford’s “Pre-existing conditions unfortunate, but should not be covered.”

The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address one of America’s most complex issues. This short, one-sided article ignores aspects of the ACA that act to protect not just patients, but insurance companies as well.

Throughout the day, there is a promotion aired on Rebel Radio that hails Oxford as the “quintessential college town,” a statement that’s hard to argue with. Part of having a great college town is having a thriving arts scene, which we have.

Amid one of the most controversial time periods in University of Mississippi history, the 2010-11 staff of the Ole Miss yearbook, The Ole Miss, came together and produced a yearbook that has since been recognized as one of the best in the country.
Each year, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association chooses finalists for its gold medal and The Ole Miss is making its first appearance on that list since the 2006-07 edition.

Alex McDaniel, editor-in-chief of The Ole Miss from 2010-11, was on her way home from New York when she heard the news.

To the Editor:

When I first heard the news that the Green Fund legislation had been referred back to Senate after passing on Tuesday night, I was shocked. I was even more shocked considering that neither I, Senator Will Bedwell, nor Taylor Cook (Campus for Clean Energy) received the news from Taylor McGraw. Instead, first news came from The DM, who contacted Taylor Cook to comment on the Green Fund legislation’s rejection.

In response to the Nov. 11 column regarding parking at the Law School; I feel your frustration.

To the Editor:

This letter is in response to the articles covering the Penn State sexual abuse scandal.

Nothing could be more nauseating than a topic like this. This scandal absolutely sickens me. There are actually several issues of concern here.

To the Editor:

If the proponents of the Green Fund have their way, tuition costs will increase nearly $400,000 per year (16,000 students X $12 X 2 semesters)… but they promise that the Green Fund will save us money? Something doesn’t smell right here.

To the Editor:

The first third of Trenton Winford’s column, “College isn’t for everyone,” is hogwash.

I stopped reading after this draconian quip: “Similarly, a high school senior can want to be a college student more than anything, but that doesn’t mean it is what he or she should be.”

I’m all for options in life, but don’t you dare tell any person or group of persons what they should or shouldn’t be.

Austin Miller: Talk about the Kentucky football season to this point. What are the Wildcats’ expectations going into this game and for the rest of the season?

What is personhood?

To Supporters of Initiative 26:

I am moved by your fervent compassion for ALL human beings, no matter what stage of development, and by the passion with which you speak of caring for and loving ALL of “the babies.”

To the Editor:

We are writing in response to the letter from Virginia Houston that was published in last Thursday’s DM. We would like to clarify a few issues that were brought up by Virginia, as well as defend our actions and intentions regarding Food Day.

In response to the DM’s recent article on the student green fee initiative, I think it’s important to clarify a few statements that were made in the article.

To the Editor:

In response to the DM’s recent article on the student green fee initiative, I think it’s important to clarify a few statements that were made in the article.  First, I want to reiterate that the grassroots effort to implement a green fee is entirely a student-led initiative.  The Office of Sustainability supports the idea of a green fee, but the ideas generated and the projects chosen should be guided by the students.

What do you think of the Occupy movement?

To the Editor:

Adam Ganucheau recommends (The DM, Oct. 26) that protestors involved in Occupy Wall Street pack up their sleeping bags, tents and bongos and go home. He paints protestors as both overly passionate citizens and as hipsters protesting just to protest. Which is it?

In the following paragraphs, I’d like to address some of his statements:

The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate believes that John Woods’ recent column in The DM leaves readers with a number of false impressions that require public correction.

To the Editor:

Recently a pressing issue was brought to the forefront. Racism at Ole Miss. It is an issue that we like to ignore and tiptoe around if possible. Two distinct points of views have been presented in The DM, one from Rev. Hood and the other from Ms. Jessica Jones.

To the Editor:

This is a response to John Woods III’s opinion piece that appeared in The Daily Mississippian on Oct. 17. It is refreshing to see student interest in the doings of Faculty Senate, a transparent organization that held a regularly scheduled meeting last Tuesday to discuss, among other things, voicing support for a university leadership under fire. It is also refreshing to see this student openly expressing his right to free speech on this campus.

May it remain unhindered for all of us.

When The Daily Mississippian rolls off the press this morning, the student newspaper will officially be 100 years old.

“Well, Happy Birthday, DM,” University of Mississippi Dean of Students Sparky Reardon said. “I think we are a much better university because we have had a student newspaper for the past 100 years.”

Julie Finley Cooper is the only student who served as editor in chief of The DM two consecutive years, from 2001-03.
