As we close in on the midway point of another semester there a quite a few hot topics that students are talking about around the campus. Parking, our football team, free scantrons, Amendment 26 and when the exact date that it will become fashionable again to wear leggings, XXXXL sweatshirts and rain boots. I'm thinking mid-October.

That said, I am going to take a different route, and talk about an issue that has been untouched as of yet by the campus water-cooler. Intramurals. I'm sticking to the important issues see?

With more than $118 million in line to upgrade the University of Mississippi campus, Ian Banner, Department of Facilities Planning director, is overseeing all the changes taking place.

“Its something we’ve always taken extremely seriously — that while we add buildings to this campus and while we have unprecedented growth, we have got to be extremely careful and respectful of what we have here,” he said. “And so (for the future) I would say (I see) a very carefully controlled and planned growth.”

Spring allocations are a chance for organizations that did not receive funding in the fall to apply or reapply for money.

This year the ASB set aside $50,000 for allocations, up from approximately $32,000 from the 2010-2011 academic year.

“I was glad we were able to increase our allocations this year, it was by far the highest level ever,” ASB president Taylor McGraw said.

In response to Trenton Winford’s “Pre-existing conditions unfortunate, but should not be covered.”

The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address one of America’s most complex issues. This short, one-sided article ignores aspects of the ACA that act to protect not just patients, but insurance companies as well.

The Associated Student Body Senate will once again view legislation in support of the green fund tonight.
The initial legislation brought up in late November saw a setback after making it to the desk of ASB president Taylor McGraw, who vetoed the legislation.
McGraw said “mandatory student fees for narrow purposes” was his greatest concern.

I feel somewhat strange admitting it, but I have fallen head over heels for this town. I have lived in a lot of places and met a lot of people, thanks to my overly enthusiastic mother who makes friends with every thing that has the ability to breathe, her classic victim being the woman standing behind her in the grocery store. Just ask artist, Zach Tutor, but had she not stormed into Square Books and antagonized the poor guy, I never would have known about Supersonic Electronic, or the amazing art it held.

Phil Bryant is the last thing Mississippi needs in an ever-evolving world.

Gov. Bryant has worked from within the government of Mississippi for more than two decades. Bryant is a man fully entrenched in the dredge that is modern government. He has little perspective on what life is like for everyday people, and his early planned policies already show his lack of perspective.

In the state of Mississippi and across the country, teachers must be certified in a certain specialization called an endorsement.
To have an endorsement, the teacher must have a master’s degree in education, and while getting the master’s degree, the teacher can choose from several different endorsements. The endorsements are ultimately several hours of class that focus on a specific type of disorder and the teacher learns how to identify, teach and treat those with the disorder.

When the average person thinks of the University of Mississippi, several things come to mind including its rich tradition in arts and literature, beautiful people, campus and, of course, the Greek scene.
Ranked as one of the top five greek schools in the nation, but there is more than just the infamous partying brought forth by popular culture when it comes to the Greek system, as it has raised over $500,000 for philanthropies over the past two years.

To the Editor:

This letter is in response to the articles covering the Penn State sexual abuse scandal.

Nothing could be more nauseating than a topic like this. This scandal absolutely sickens me. There are actually several issues of concern here.

Brian Barnes, Douglass MacKimm, Baker Boler, Wes Sutton and Tom Fletcher are students in the Lott Leadership Institute who have been working toward gathering information about the new plus/minus grading scale and argue for its use in all undergraduate classes.

The new plus/minus grading scale has been written about multiple times since its introduction, but we have a slightly different take. We are in favor of the scale, but are opposed to leaving the decision of its use to the discretion of the teacher.

Do you think everyone will be taking classes online?

As we return from our Thanksgiving break and begin traditional classes again, along with elementary and high schools all over the country, a feeling of normalcy settles us back into the routine.

We’re used to and comfortable with the education mandated by our forefathers. But “normal” classrooms are being challenged by a new world in learning, a new tactic to reach some students who supposedly don’t adapt to the everyday way – something called the virtual classroom.

The Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at the University of Mississippi is serving an interim suspension while they are under investigation, the reason for which is unknown.
The fraternity is not allowed to hold any parties at their house or hold any event while the investigation is ongoing. Associate Dean of Students Scott Wallace explained an interim suspension is fairly routine for any Greek fraternity or sorority if they are in the process of being investigated.

Why are you in college?

We have all heard the line time and time again, “You can be whatever you want to be.”

While that is great to tell an 8-year-old, that saying does not apply as people approach adulthood. By adulthood, I mean the age of majority, which is 18.

Unfortunately, the definition of adulthood has changed over the years, and in some instances it means around the age of 25.
