Dear Editor,

It seems like everyone is talking about the Ole Miss loss to Vanderbilt.

First of all, I know we lost.

We lost 30-7.

We lost to Vanderbilt.

“My daughter’s friends are over, and we just got a new puppy,” he said. “I guess now is as good of time as any to talk.”

Arriveé is a straight shooter. His words come out crisp and clear. He speaks with no accent and fills a conversation on film with all the technical jargon that comes with being in the filmmaking industry for years. One gets the feeling that he was worked for those words.

The Oxford Film Festival has entertained citizens of Oxford for nearly a decade, and this year, the OFF crew is asking for more involvement from the festival-goers — particularly from those in fraternities and sororities at the University of Mississippi.
The film festival will kick off its ninth season at The Lyric tonight and spend the rest of the weekend at the Oxford Malco theater. Those in charge are looking to the Greeks to take a bigger part in this year’s festival.

We are a family at Ole Miss. Some Mississippians would argue that the state of Mississippi is like a family too. In the wake of arguments between Ole Miss and Mississippi State fans on social media outlets about anything imaginable, I thought about some comparisons between the state universities and a family.

As Ole Miss fans, we have always considered ourselves the big brother in the family. Mississippi State is the little brother that pesters us until we give in.

When the season changes, people usually adjust to new temperatures but, at least in the Residential College South, the adjustment was a bit unexpected.
As students came back in from the winter break, those at the RC faced not only an unusual heat outside, but inside the building as well.
“On the first day we got here, we could not sleep,” undecided sophomore Austin Wheeler said. “It was way too hot.”
While students are able to control the temperature in their rooms within a few degrees, for many, that wasn’t enough.

By the late 1990s, the University of Mississippi had already enrolled its first black student, cheered on its first black student-athlete, elected its first black Miss Ole Miss and crowned its first black Miss University. However, at the turn of the millennium the students had yet to be led by a black Associated Student Body president.

I’m sick as I write this. My back aches, my shoulders are tense and I’ve found myself coughing up very interesting variations of the color green. Simply put, my body hates me right now. I don’t know what I did to upset it, but it is clearly getting its point across that it is very, very displeased with me.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

In a world of social media craze, we are becoming so unbelievably exposed to different sources of information that we often neglect to realize what we are taking in. Recently, informational or opinionated “viral” YouTube video links have been posted to Facebook walls and Twitter feeds. Most college students have seen the “Religion versus Jesus” video in the past month or two, and similar videos are spreading around our social media outlets like wildfire. I saw a link to another one of these videos — this time, though, I watched it.

f you were to tell local artist, Zach Tutor, five years ago that he would be curating his own art show in San Francisco, he would not have believed you.

Tutor, a former University of Mississippi student and Oxford native has been running one of the most popular art blogs on the Internet today, Supersonic Electronic.

“Art is all I’ve ever known,” Tutor said.

While his success may have come to a bit of a shock to him, he was all but prepared for it.

As Rebels, our nature is to be somewhat arrogant. The Ole Miss "swagger” has existed for as long as anyone can remember — the pretentious looks we give to our opponents in the Grove, the enormous amount of pride we have for every single tradition Ole Miss possesses and the overall feeling of vast superiority at outside events are things every Rebel who has walked the halls of Ole Miss treasures. Outsiders view our attitude as arrogant or snooty; we tend to think of it more as a way of life. The creator of the expression, “We aren’t snobs, we’re just better than you,” must have attended Ole Miss.

The infamous term “bad economy” became all too real for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Earlier this month, 112 UMMC employees were laid off from work due to a downturn in the economy. James Keeton, vice chancellor of affairs, predicts the loss of UMMC’s employees will save the medical center $12 million annually, according to The Clarion-Ledger. UMMC’s finances were reported to have been in the red last year, which prompted the sudden reduction in jobs.
