QUESTION: He quoted that would "get real ugly." Do you know what that means?

As I come closer to the end of my journey at Ole Miss and move into the professional world, I have become exceedingly thoughtful about my communication with friends, family and colleagues, or the lack thereof.

I have recently become puzzled by the fact that I only get to know some people on the surface. I often find myself questioning whether or not I have a desire to get to know people better, or is it that we live in a society where social networks inhibit our ability to get to know people beyond what meets the eye?

In a world of social media craze, we are becoming so unbelievably exposed to different sources of information that we often neglect to realize what we are taking in. Recently, informational or opinionated “viral” YouTube video links have been posted to Facebook walls and Twitter feeds. Most college students have seen the “Religion versus Jesus” video in the past month or two, and similar videos are spreading around our social media outlets like wildfire. I saw a link to another one of these videos — this time, though, I watched it.

Last week’s protests against the would-be anti-piracy bills SOPA and PIPA got global attention; Wikipedia claims that over 160 million people saw their page denouncing the bills, and at least that many people laid eyes on Google’s “censored” logo. Now, voting on both bills has been “delayed indefinitely” due to the public outcry against them, but there still seems to be some confusion about what the fuss was about in the first place.

On Monday, in a unanimous 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court held that police must obtain a warrant before using a global positioning system to track suspects.

Justice Samuel Alito focused on the physical nature of attaching a GPS device to a suspect’s vehicle.

Frankly, this is not a surprising outcome. One can easily imagine a variety of ways in which police officers maneuver themselves in order to attach these devices to cars.

Are you lying about anything online?

Be honest, have you really read and loved the entire works of Dostoevsky in the original Russian? Do you really celebrate the entire catalogue of Woody Allen’s early works? If you’re lying about anything in an online profile, it could soon be a criminal offense if the White House gets its way.

What do you think about Southern Christians?

I’ve struggled with whether or not I should write about something as personal as my own religion and for a number of reasons.

I know it’s not kosher for a columnist to write about themselves writing and the process that they go through, but I feel like it’s necessary in this  case, so bear with me.

The Internet can be overwhelming. Websites are full of things like fashion, recipes and quotes that you would like to remember but easily forget from one day to the next.

A small team of nine people from Palo Alto, Calif., decided to create a website that would make it easy for web browsers to document and organize things they find on the Internet, and Pinterest is now one of the fastest-growing social services in the world, according to the Pinterest team.

Proposition 26.  We’ve all heard of it, whether it’s from flyers thrown in our face, heated Facebook debates or even discussions amongst our peers.  There are valid points on either side, but the loosely written amendment has a lot of Mississippians seriously worried.  So, what exactly does this four-lined amendment entail for women’s contraceptive rights?

There are valid points on either side, but the loosely written amendment has a lot of Mississippians seriously worried. Those wondering exactly what this four-lined amendment entails for women’s contraceptive rights need to look no further than The Robert C. Khayat Law School, which will host a community forum tonight at 5 p.m. in room 1078.

This past Tuesday, more than 5,000 University of Mississippi students cast their votes for the on-campus personalities.

Anyone who had somehow forgotten about the impending election day was immediately reminded when he or she stepped on campus.

The tools and tricks of modern technology like the Internet, Facebook, email, texting and Twitter have created platforms upon which we can reach entire social networks in seconds, with only a few clicks of a mouse.
We can communicate, comment and share information like never before, with an ease that many of us take for granted.
Beyond making it socially acceptable for us to share the miscellaneous details of our daily lives through a status update or tweet, networking tools have proven revolutionary when it comes to organization, especially in politics.

President Barack Obama is holding the first-ever town hall Q&A session with Americans via the social network Twitter on July 6.

I for one, am very interested in the leader of our country’s attempt at intertwining social networking with government business. I don’t think I have any real problems with it; after all, the president held a Facebook town hall in April and successfully used the site during his 2008 campaign.

Ever since our generation got its hands on the computer, Google was the search engine god of the Internet. It answers all our questions from health diagnostics to directions to our favorite restaurants.

Since everyone thinks so highly of it, we expect a genius team to come up with anything and be successful at it.

In this age of “following” people, businesses and just about any inanimate object that could possibly be tracked, watched or featured, France has done something that might cause the collective mouths of we Americans to form that perfect “oh” of disbelief: They have banned the use of the words Facebook and Twitter from French TV and radio news unless used in an actual story about the companies themselves.
