Chances are, most women reading this column are no strangers to a phenomenon that I find rather ridiculous. No matter how often it happens, it still makes me feel uncomfortable, self-conscious and sometimes, even threatened.

What is this phenomenon, you ask? It is the “catcall” – the seemingly harmless whistle that certain “breeds” of men use when they think a passing girl is attractive, or when they just want to be obnoxious.

Just 48 hours after losing a heartbreaker to Florida, the Ole Miss men’s basketball team returned to the court to host the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Rebels (14-7, 4-3 SEC) led for much of the game, but the Gamecocks (9-11, 1-5 SEC) refused to go away, knocking down shot after shot to stay in the game.

While exams were finishing up and students began going home for winter break, the Ole Miss men’s basketball team was preparing for the long-awaited debut from freshman transfer guard Jelan Kendrick.

After enrolling at the University of Memphis out of Wheeler High School in Atlanta, Kendrick decided to transfer after his first semester and ultimately decided to attend Ole Miss. In doing so, Kendrick became the first McDonald’s All-American in Ole Miss basketball history.

Freshman guard Maurice Aniefiok is a long way from home. Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, Aniefiok played soccer growing up before ever picking up a basketball. From that day on, though, Aniefiok knew basketball was his ticket in life. He soon realized, however, that he needed to come to America to take his skills to the next level.

Demarco Cox enters his sophomore season a completely different player. After stepping on campus and playing at 315 pounds this past season, Cox lost 40 pounds over the summer to get down to 275. His physical transformation has already shown, as he is running the court a lot better and is a lot quicker on his feet on both sides of the court. Cox credits running every day and completely changing his diet.

It is not often you see true freshmen starting at point guard in college basketball. That, however, is exactly what will likely take place tonight when the Ole Miss basketball team takes the court against Louisiana Monroe. If not tonight, you can expect Jarvis Summers to break into the starting lineup soon thereafter.

Gone from last year’s team are guards Chris Warren, Zach Graham and Trevor Gaskins. Sophomore guard Dundrecous Nelson looks to use the experience he learned from the leadership those players left to help ease the loss of those players.

The team has a lot of younger players, 10 underclassmen to five upperclassmen.

“You just got to find a way to help them mesh and grow and get a little bit better each day,” head coach Renee Ladner said. “We’ll be imperfect, but that is why you play a non-conference schedule.”

The Ole Miss Rebels (2-3, 0-2 SEC) will face their toughest opponent to date when the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) rolls into Oxford this Saturday.

Ole Miss will do so without senior running back Brandon Bolden, junior center A.J. Hawkins, senior offensive guard Alex Washington and sophomore wide receiver Philander Moore, who will all serve one-game suspensions for a violation of team rules, head coach Houston Nutt said Thursday.

Put Vanderbilt behind them
It’s easy to let a terrible loss like Vanderbilt linger, but the Rebels can not afford for that to happen if they want to turn around their season. After the loss to Vanderbilt last season, the Rebels were 1-2 and struggled to a 4-8 record. However, in head coach Houston Nutt’s first year, Ole Miss was 2-2 after a loss to Vanderbilt, but surged to finish 9-4, and winning the Cotton Bowl.

Wednesday’s practice belonged to the defense.

With fall practice quickly approaching, here are some things to look for as Ole Miss prepares to begin its 2011 season.

1. Who wins the quarterback job?

This will be the main focus for Ole Miss as the season nears. Sophomore Barry Brunetti is thought to have the lead heading into fall practice, but junior Randall Mackey isn’t far behind after showing flashes of his talent in the spring. Junior college transfer Zack Stoudt is in the mix as well.

2. Is Matt Hall ready to contribute at right guard?
