Jeremiah Masoli’s story has been well-documented.

From the transfer rumors in August, to his NCAA clearance the day before the Jacksonville State football game, to the 31-23 loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.

He was the story of the 2010 Ole Miss football season that ended 4-8. Masoli threw for 2,039 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and also rushed for 544 yards and six touchdowns in the fall.

A year ago Ole Miss quarterback Randall Mackey sat on the sidelines as Jeremiah Masoli led the Rebels with both his live arm and impressive running ability.

Mackey, who redshirted last year out of East Mississippi Community College, has shown that same ability as Ole Miss has gone through spring practice. The Rebels held their first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, and through five practices Mackey appears to have a leg up on his fellow competitors, juniors Nathan Stanley and Zack Stoudt and freshman Barry Brunetti.

Jeremiah Masoli was back in Oxford yesterday, as was Jerrell Powe.

Powe and Masoli, along with 13 of their teammates from last year’s squad, were in town for Ole Miss’ annual pro day, an opportunity for NFL scouts representing 24 different franchises to size up the abilities of the former Rebs up-close and personal.

The names Chris Warren, Reginald Buckner, Kayla Melson and Courtney Marbra may not ring many bells.

However, not a soul is confused when the names Michael Oher, Dexter McCluster, Archie Manning or Jeremiah Masoli are mentioned. Many people on campus claim to be a football trivia star.

How is it that we know the stars of our football teams, past and present, yet we can’t name more than a handful of the Rebel basketball legacies?

When Jeremiah Masoli hit the turf on an ill-fated fourth-down scramble, the result became chillingly clear.

We had lost the Egg Bowl for the second straight year and finished the football season with just four wins and eight losses.

Pom poms, tattered and torn by angry fists, lay lifeless on cold concrete as numb feet shuffled toward the stadium exits. Tempers were short after a season fraught with disappointment.

A Mississippi State fan rang a cowbell, and an Ole Miss fan made it clear where he wanted to shove it.

Ole Miss trails No. 5 LSU 20-17 at the half in Baton Rouge largely in part to the rushing efforts of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and running back Brandon Bolden.

Bolden scored on a 50-yard burst on the first play of the Rebels' second possession to tie the score at seven, while Masoli made the score 20-17 on a four-yard QB keeper against one of the nation's top defenses seconds before the half.

The 2010 Ole Miss football season has been difficult to put into words; when readers ask me why I’ve quit writing about the Rebels this fall I respond: “I ran out of nice things to say.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – This year’s Ole Miss football team has seen its fair share of rough days, but Saturday’s game against Tennessee might have been a season low for the Rebels. 

After a 43-21 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday, Ole Miss heads to Knoxville and looks to move one step closer to bowl eligibility against Tennessee at 11 a.m. on CBS.

With rivalry games against No. 5 LSU and No. 19 Mississippi State the next two weeks, Saturday’s game takes on added importance for the Rebels (4-5, 1-4 SEC).

“Even with the type of season we’ve had, we can still go to a bowl, so there’s still excitement,” sophomore defensive end D.T. Shackelford said.

Led by a powerful running game and an inspired second-half performance from a much-maligned defense, Ole Miss snapped a three-game losing streak with a 43-21 victory over Louisiana on Saturday night.
