At the end of his tenure as governor, Hayley Barbour pardoned 200 felons as one of his last official acts. This act, uncommon on such a large scale, will likely have far-reaching implications on Mississippi’s constitutional rules regarding pardons. On top of that, Atty. Gen. Jim Hood believes that at least 156 of the pardons do not meet constitutional requirements and has launched an investigation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech nearly 49 years ago, rallying over 200,000 civil rights supporters in Washington, D.C., during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Just over a week ago, Kelly Shannon and a group of University of Mississippi students were recognized for their efforts, this time through community service in King’s name.
King’s legacy lives on through Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and observed as far away as Hiroshima.

So in “Immortals,” a ruthless maniacal king wants to, you guessed it, take over the world.  Along the way, he and his army come across a village where they slaughter everyone except a muscle-bound warrior who they turn into a slave, but he escapes and seeks bloody vengeance on them.

Sound familiar?

Also, that muscle-bound warrior has been trained and looked after his entire life by none other than Zeus, king of the gods, disguised as an old man.

Sound familiar?

AUSTIN MILLER: What are your overall thoughts on the Houston Nutt’s four seasons at Ole Miss?

EDWARD ASCHOFF: I think things started off better than anybody could have ever imagined with back-to-back Cotton Bowl victories. He was the king of town. People loved Houston Nutt, and he was really engaging. He fit in well with the community and was exactly what a team like that needed at the time after the disaster with Ed Orgeron.

Students who use the many taxi services provided in Oxford may see some changes in the months to come.

The Board of Aldermen held a public reading Tuesday on eight new amendments to the city taxi ordinance.

This could make it harder for new taxi companies to open shop in Oxford.

“We’ve got to clean up our act here,” Mayor Pat Patterson said. “I mean, I hate regulation but this is too important. If you ask me if I would rather not have the taxis then them not have the insurance.”

Whether you liked Michael Jackson or not, there is no mistaking the fact that he was definitely a presence. He lived his life in the spotlight of critics and fans alike, while remaining even today, two years after his death, still “dancing on the floor in the round.”

In last week’s review of “The Lion King 3D,” I lamented the fact that some parents insist on bringing their screaming spawn to the theater in a merciless attempt to destroy all that is good and enjoyable about the theater-going experience.
“The Lion King” is a children’s movie though, so it’s at least understandable that there would be children there to see it.
“50/50,” on the other hand, is an R-rated dramatic comedy (or comedic drama?) about a guy with cancer.

First, a word on bringing children to the theater: If your child is physically incapable of shutting up for longer than 30 seconds, take one for the team and just stay home.

So yeah, “The Lion King.”  Originally released in 1994, “The Lion King” was the last truly great hand-drawn animated movie and marked the high point of the “Disney Renaissance” that began with “The Little Mermaid” a few years before.

“Don’t Worry — We’ll Get More!” I saw this slogan on a poster in the 1993 movie “Super Mario Brothers.”

In the movie, a dystopian, fungus-infested Manhattan is ruled under the thumb of Dennis Hopper, who sees the city’s resources dwindling.

The poster in question promoted Dennis Hopper’s character, King Koopa, as an environmentalist whose solution to the problems facing his people is to find more.

The butterflies in the stomach, the rush of those adolescent hormones — it’s a hallmark of those tumultuous early teenage years.

For a few of us, that first crush results in bliss; however, for the rest of us, it’s a heartbreaker. For 15-year-old Larry King, it killed him.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Almost as soon as it began, former baseball star Roger Clemens' perjury trial ended Thursday - in a mistrial the judge blamed on prosecutors and said a "first-year law student" would have known to avoid.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton left the question of a new trial up in the air. But he called a halt to the trial under way after prosecutors showed jurors evidence that he had ruled out - videotaped revelations that a teammate had said he'd told his wife Clemens confessed to using a drug.

Not everyone can handle a classic Shakespearean play, but most everyone loves a classic musical, right? Amid the two Shakespeare shows this summer, the Oxford Shakespeare Festival is drawing in the family crowds with Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “Camelot,” a musical extravaganza of medieval proportions.

Obesity rates in Mississippi, specifically Lafayette County, are high and have health professionals concerned for the well being of the state.

Sitting in a theater minutes before the curtain goes up is one of the most exhilarating moments on earth. For a brief amount of time, while the overture swells from the orchestra pit and the only thing visible is a bright red curtain, anything can happen, and there are no limitations.

As the shadows of the hidden orchestra bounce across the walls of the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, the excitement builds and suddenly you find yourself in Venice with many brightly-costumed women.

This week is a slow week in the world of movies.

This week is a slow week in the world of movies.

“Arthur” was released last week, and “Scream 4” will be released Friday.

DVD releases include “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “The King’s Speech,” “Country Strong” and “Bambi.”

So to make up for the lack of killer titles, this week includes a quick preview of the first set of summer blockbusters.

As a lifetime .298 hitter who amassed 762 home runs, more than 500 stolen bases, and nearly 2,000 RBIs in his illustrious career, Barry Bonds was, arguably, one of the greatest hitters of all time.

But it is his involvement with BALCO rather than baseball that has forced Bonds back into the world of relevant headlines for the first time since 2007.

Chris Barber, a first year law student, said parking at the new law school is a bunch of “malarkey.”

Barber figured when he had to buy a $60 law school commuter parking decal that law students would have the new lot to themselves.

“It was fine before the undergrads came back to school,” Barber said. “Now, it is starting to become an issue because undergrads are parking in the lot.”

Not always.

Premiering this weekend at Oxford Film Festival is Don R. Lewis and John T. Beck’s first feature documentary, “Worst in Show.”

The hour-long documentary showcases the annual “World’s Ugliest Dog Contest,” which takes place at the Sonoma-Marina Fair in Petaluma, Calif.

In their film, Lewis and Beck unveil the weird and wacky world of ugly dog contests and those who compete in them.

“Black Swan”
“Black Swan” began receiving attention in late 2010 based on rumors of highly provocative scenes between stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, as well as the extensive ballet training each underwent for her role.

Since its Dec. 17 release, it has only gained more buzz with four nominations and one win at the Golden Globes and five Oscar nominations.
