The Daily Mississippian sports editor Austin Miller recently caught up with ESPN.com's SEC blogger and Oxford native Edward Aschoff talks about Ole Miss' season so far, best/worst case scenario for the rest of the season and what it will take for the Rebels to pull the upset of No. 2 Alabama Saturday.

Austin Miller: What do you think the Ole Miss football season to this point?

Monday night at Irie on the Square, Lafayette High School quarterback and Oxford native Jeremy Liggins stood up and faced a capacity crowd with five helmets of college teams on the table. Those five helmets represented Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. Quickly, Liggins reached out and grabbed the LSU helmet, saying simply, “Go Tigers, baby.”

For many, the thought of Liggins choosing a school other than Ole Miss on the Oxford Square seemed strange, but the 6’4,” 275-pound quarterback said that wasn’t really the case.

Sophomore Barry Brunetti rushes for 47 yards in the second quarter to help set up a junior Bryson Rose field goal before half time. Brunetti replaced junior Zack Stoudt at quarterback late in the first quarter. Brunetti had 15 carries for 74 along with  5 completions for 30 yards. The Rebels fall to 2-9 (0-7) with the 52-3 loss to LSU.

In a game that looked to be a huge mismatch in favor of LSU, the top-ranked Tigers (11-0, 7-0 SEC) dominated the Ole Miss Rebels (2-9, 0-7 SEC) from start to finish. The final count was 52-3, the largest margin of victory in the 100-year history of the Ole Miss-LSU rivalry and the Rebels’ worst loss since the 1974 season.

“They are a really good football team,” head coach Houston Nutt said. “But we helped them. We have to get ready for that last one (against Mississippi State). That’s the bottom line.”

On Saturday night, every Ole Miss senior will be playing their last game inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and they will do so against the No. 1 LSU Tigers. It will also mark head coach Houston Nutt’s last home game in Oxford, before the Rebels close out the 2011 season next week at Mississippi State. For now, all Nutt is worried about is LSU.

When the Ole Miss Rebels tangle with the top-ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday, it will not only be the last home game in the Houston Nutt era, but it will also be Senior Night for the team’s 13 seniors.
For two of those seniors, they will be going out playing against their hometown team. Running back Brandon Bolden calls Baton Rouge, La., home and defensive end Kentrell Lockett hails from nearby Hahnville, La.
Both players have seen the ups and downs of the Ole Miss football program in Nutt’s tenure, and both have played instrumental roles in some big wins.

Repeat the quick start

This past week against Alabama, Ole Miss jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, thanks to a big pass play from Randall Mackey to Nick Brassell, followed by a short touchdown run from Jeff Scott. The Rebels must do the same this week against Arkansas, which has shown a propensity to come out sluggish and fall behind early in a few games. If Ole Miss wants to keep this game close, an early lead is a must.

Younger players must step up on defense

FRESNO, Calif. -- Running back Jeff Scott rushed for a career-high 138 yards and scored two touchdowns, and senior running back Brandon Bolden added two touchdowns to lead the Ole Miss Rebels (2-3) to a 38-28 win against Fresno State here Saturday night at Jim Sweeney Field.
The Rebels capped their first trip ever to California by earning their first win of the season against an FBS-level team.

On Friday night, the team travels to Fayetteville to face the Razorbacks of Arkansas (2-5). Then the Rebels head south to Baton Rouge for a Sunday showdown against the Tigers of LSU (5-3-1).
“This is certainly the time of year we are looking forward to starting conference play,” head coach Matt Mott said.

After beginning Southeastern Conference play 1-1 at home this past weekend, the Ole Miss volleyball team is heading on the road to face off with two more SEC opponents.
“We’re going to be on the road and facing two teams with two new head coaches in Georgia and Auburn,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. “I expect both teams to be scrappy and to have two hard-fought matches.”
Last season, the Rebels (5-5, 1-1 SEC) had great success, winning both matches against Georgia and Auburn.

SUNDAY: OLE MISS 3, ARKANSAS 2
After a five-set loss to LSU, the defending Southeastern Conference Western Division champion, Ole Miss (5-5, 1-1 SEC) looked to rebound against the Arkansas Razorbacks (9-4, 1-1 SEC).
They did exactly that. They commanded the first set and won the match 3-2 (25-16, 18-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-4). The Rebels continue in SEC action on the road next weekend at Georgia (Sept. 23) and at Auburn (Sept. 25).
After taking the first set, the Razorbacks, just like LSU, evened the match at 1-1.

Ole Miss opens its season Saturday afternoon against BYU in what is a key game for the Rebels. Here's what Ole Miss needs to do to ensure a win over the Cougars.

1. Put pressure on Heaps

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU committed major violations while recruiting a junior college football player, but won’t be slapped with any postseason bans or future scholarship reductions, the NCAA ruled Tuesday. The governing body decided to place the school on probation for a year and cited a former assistant coach for unethical conduct.

Past the halfway point of the Southeastern Conference portion of the season, the Ole Miss baseball team finds itself in a three-way tie for first place in the SEC West.

Lost in this statement, however, is a relatively disappointing .500 winning percentage and a brutal stretch to end conference play.

The Diamond Rebels look for a repeat of last year, when they swept LSU in Oxford with a pair of walk-off wins.

This afternoon, the Lady Netters try to get their second conference win of the season when they welcome LSU (3-6, 1-1 SEC) to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Rebels host No. 14 Arkansas (11-4, 1-1 SEC).
While the Tigers’ record might seem lackluster, they are coming off an impressive 4-0 shutout of then No. 27 South Carolina.

It’s rather ironic that it is the visiting Auburn Tigers coming into tonight’s game off a win.

It’s rather ironic that it is the visiting Auburn Tigers coming into tonight’s game off a win.

The Tigers defeated Mississippi State 65-62 Saturday in Auburn, while the Rebels lost on the road at Alabama, stopping their win streak at three games.

But irony aside, the Rebels should be able to get back to their winning ways this evening.

It’s no secret that the Southeastern Conference West is largely a joke this season.

Snow caused the University of Mississippi to close down Wednesday afternoon, but that didn’t stop Ole Miss and visiting LSU from playing a little basketball.

Despite icy roads and several inches of snow outside, an announced 2,112 showed up to the Tad Pad to watch Ole Miss defeat LSU 66-60 in a game where the Rebels played from behind for the majority of the second half.

There’s a big game tonight at the Tad Pad.

There’s a big game tonight at the Tad Pad.

No, I’m not kidding. Tonight’s 8 p.m. game between the Ole Miss Rebels, 15-8 (3-5), and the LSU Tigers, 10-13 (2-6) has the potential to be one of the most pivotal games of this season.

I know the Rebels won by 27 in Baton Rouge last month and will be favored in this evening’s game, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a big one for Andy Kennedy’s team.

The Lady Rebels basketball team was defeated by LSU Sunday with the Tigers doubling up Ole Miss 76-38. The loss brings the Rebels to 10-12 and 3-7 in the SEC.

A major factor to the loss was the Lady Rebels’ inability to stop LSU’s three-point shooters. The Lady Tigers had 21 points from three-point land in the first half.

“We knew that coming in,” said University of Mississippi coach Renee Ladner. “We knew who their shooters were and we just did not take care of the three.”

Ole Miss trails No. 5 LSU 20-17 at the half in Baton Rouge largely in part to the rushing efforts of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and running back Brandon Bolden.

Bolden scored on a 50-yard burst on the first play of the Rebels' second possession to tie the score at seven, while Masoli made the score 20-17 on a four-yard QB keeper against one of the nation's top defenses seconds before the half.
