Pitchers:

While there is still a lot to be determined in this young pitching staff, one thing is clear: there is depth. The weekend starters are not yet set, but it looks as though freshman Bobby Wahl and senior R.J. Hively will take the hill on Fridays and Saturdays, respectively, for the Rebels. The Sunday spot seems to be down to three guys, but it’s anyone’s battle at the start of spring practice.

“Coach (Mike Bianco) has said that whoever performs the best is going to get the weekend spots, so we’ll see what happens,” Wahl said.

Sophomore Mike Mayers may have a slight lead at the moment with a season of SEC experience under his belt. However, freshmen Josh Laxer and Hawtin Buchanan, as well as juniors Tanner Bailey and Dylan Chavez, are right there in the mix. Look for Mayers to take the Sunday spot to start the season with two of the other four pitchers to fill the mid-week spots.

“(Mayers’) slider is something he’s worked on since last year,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “I think it’s just normal progression. He pitched over 50 innings last season, which is a ton for a freshman. The slider is better, but I think he’s better all around.”

Junior Brett Huber will be counted on in the late innings of the game and fill the closer’s role as he did his freshman year.

“Right now, I’m just working on commanding the strike zone and stuff like that,” Huber said. “I’m just working on being more consistent out there. Last year I had some problems with that.”

The Oxford Board of Aldermen and the University of Mississippi have initiated updates to the Oxford-University Transit system in the past few weeks. Along with blue, red, yellow and green lines, a purple line will be added to the mix, creating a Saturday route.
This new purple line will accommodate a very specific, growing issue that has been voiced and observed within Oxford: some transit-dependent people have trouble traveling around Oxford on the weekend when the green and yellow lines do not run.

Just how bad are the state's reading scores?

For quite some time, billboards across Mississippi have read, “Our children can’t read: ippississiM.”

It is difficult for many to imagine living in a world without the ability to read.

Lacking this ability has tremendous and adverse effects on individuals who seek to effectively communicate with friends, colleagues and family.

Melvin Harris dismissed from the team

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt opened his Monday afternoon press conference by announcing that junior wide receiver Melvin Harris had been dismissed from the program.

“We’ve really tried to help him for three years,” he said. “I don’t want to get all the way involved in everything — the scenario of this thing –– but he’s going to continue to go to school and hopefully get his life in order.

As Associated Student Body attorney general Evan Kirkham stood on the top step of the Lyceum for the third time to make an announcement about the results of Miss Ole Miss, the two remaining campaigns stood by in anticipation, ready for the whole process to be over.

The moment Kirckham announced Mary Alex Street was the victor, the air turned to a mixture of excitement from Street’s campaign, disappointment from Emily Monsour’s side and an overall sigh of relief that everything was finally over.

With the 38-28 win over Fresno State nearly two weeks ago, the Rebels not only got a much-needed win, but they also found themselves a new quarterback in junior Randall Mackey.

Mackey, who completed 8 of 18 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown against the Bulldogs of Fresno State, managed to light a fire under a stagnant offense that struggled through the first few weeks of the season.

While Oxford may be known for the thousands of students the University of Mississippi attracts, the steps required to achieve higher learning are not overlooked.
Oxford School District’s 2011 enrollment summary noted that the area is host to 3,733 students, ranging from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. Despite growing enrollment, however, Interim Superintendent Brian Harvey said the schools do not offer a tutoring service but allow after-school tutoring opportunities on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

At present, there are education inequalities that exist beyond those between whites, Hispanics and blacks in America, but there are some that exist geographically as well.

These inequalities exist between Southern and Northern states, even more specific among Southern states.

The most common thoughts associated with the works of William Shakespeare consist of the run-time being too long, the words too confusing and the rhythm too annoying.

Dex Edwards’ production of Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” opens the Ole Miss theater season with a laugh-out-loud production that is easy to follow, immensely entertaining and only 90 minutes long, including intermission.

After four games of the Ole Miss 2011 football season, a lack of offense has become a recurring theme.
On Saturday, Ole Miss managed only 183 total yards of offense and a measly eight first downs against Georgia in a 27-13 loss. The Rebels scored only one offensive touchdown, a 38-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Randall Mackey to freshman wide receiver Donte Moncrief on a trick play.

Members of the Associated Student Body cabinet have begun the discussion of amending the university’s smoking laws.
There are 38 designated smoking areas around campus, which are enforced by the University Police Department, to help protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke. These areas first came about in 2007.
However, these designated areas are not always used appropriately. Over the past two and half years, UPD has given out approximately 250 tobacco citations.

Lee makes changes

After taking Ole Miss nearly two full games before their offense saw the end zone for the first time against a FBS opponent, the Rebels hit the playbook this week, but this time to take out plays.

“I think we just cut out 30 percent of our plays and eliminated one protection totally,” first-year offensive coordinator David Lee said after Tuesday’s practice.
