As we close in on the midway point of another semester there a quite a few hot topics that students are talking about around the campus. Parking, our football team, free scantrons, Amendment 26 and when the exact date that it will become fashionable again to wear leggings, XXXXL sweatshirts and rain boots. I'm thinking mid-October.

That said, I am going to take a different route, and talk about an issue that has been untouched as of yet by the campus water-cooler. Intramurals. I'm sticking to the important issues see?

Studying. That’s what every college student does, or at least thinks about doing.
Some say they need complete silence. Others study to music. It varies for everyone.

Studying. That’s what every college student does, or at least thinks about doing.

Some say they need complete silence. Others study to music. It varies for everyone.

“I study in a secluded area,” Ole Miss freshman business administration major Raven Southward said. “Noises distract me.”

Others can’t pick up a book without music or some kind of noise in the background.

A little past midnight, a bleeding sophomore collapsed to the floor holding his stomach. He was stabbed in his stomach, lower abdomen, under his left eye and behind his ear. His drunken roommate and former fraternity brother stood over him with a knife in his hand as the third roommate dialed 911. The Lafayette police arrived to find the two men fighting tooth and nail. After a critical week-long stay in Baptist Memorial Hospital, the 20-year-old English major withdrew from the University of Mississippi and returned to his home in Austin, Texas. That was Feb. 25, 2007, nearly five years ago to this day.

In a world of social media craze, we are becoming so unbelievably exposed to different sources of information that we often neglect to realize what we are taking in. Recently, informational or opinionated “viral” YouTube video links have been posted to Facebook walls and Twitter feeds. Most college students have seen the “Religion versus Jesus” video in the past month or two, and similar videos are spreading around our social media outlets like wildfire. I saw a link to another one of these videos — this time, though, I watched it.

The Associated Student Body at the University of Mississippi is encouraging students to be “good.” For 21 days, at least.
The first major of initiative from the ASB in 2012 will start tomorrow.
The challenge, “21 Days of Good,” is a challenge for students to complete something ASB deputy chief of staff Katie Smith describes as easily doable. The task hopes to foster increased personal interaction among the student body, Smith said.
ASB president Taylor McGraw said he is excited to see the initiative in action.

As of 2011, Mississippi was the most obese state in the nation. That makes six years that Mississippi has garnered this “honor.”

Yet, we see that the state of Mississippi and its leadership have not come up with a sustainable, successful plan to reverse this trend.

With his landslide victory in the South Carolina primary last week, Newt Gingrich rebounded from what seemed like a slowly dying campaign after hard losses in Iowa and New Hampshire. As former Speaker Gingrich is once again the national frontrunner, Republican voters should investigate his record and ask themselves if he is truly representative of the Republican Party.

Students pull long nights studying for tests, finishing projects and completing homework, but for some students, coffee and energy drinks aren’t enough to stay up and stay focused.
More and more college students are turning to ADHD medication to solve this problem.
Conner Hicks, a freshman undecided major, is prescribed to take ADHD medication by his doctor.
“I use it as prescribed every day, but I tend to use it sometimes just to keep myself awake to get my school work done,” he said.

In the past few months, Subway, Toss It Up and other healthier dining options have come to The University of Mississippi, but some still do not think it is enough.

Students looking for a quick meal or snack on campus have plenty of options between the food court in the Student Union, coffee shops and the numerous vending machines in major buildings, but some students think there are not as many healthy eating options compared to unhealthy options.

James Meredith made history in October 1962 when he became the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Along with the major step forward, however, came the infamous rioting that tarnished the university’s reputation for decades.

Our student body has gained a new mindset since then, digging our university out of a hole the students put us in. Although we have made great strides, part of our reputation is still stained by this rioting.

Set six years after their last adventure, “HK3” picks up with our affable stoner heroes, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), who are leading separate lives and haven’t spoken to each other in a few years.
