The growing industry of retail medicine has brought the Clinic at Walmart to Oxford.

Retail medicine, an industry composed of small health care facilities in retail stores with pharmacies, has been providing convenient, affordable and timely access to health services since the first clinic opened in 2000.

The Clinic at Walmart in Oxford has a staff of two nurse practitioners, including Merilyn Charlton, who said the idea to bring the national trend to the Oxford Walmart came about a year ago.

Every year approximately 50,000 qualified nursing applicants are turned down from American schools.

The University of Mississippi received 340 qualified applications this fall, yet was only able to accept 140. The main causes of this widespread issue are both fiscal and physical; there isn’t enough room for the large amounts of applicants nor enough money to hire additional qualified professors to teach the courses. Another problem is that more graduates go on to practice nursing rather than teach it.

Is Apple's Siri ultra-conservative?

I do not have an iPhone 4S yet. I desperately want one, though, and for one reason alone: to taunt Siri with ridiculous questions and requests.

Siri is Apple’s version of a “digital assistant.” The official Apple website declares, “Your wish is its command.”

Some find it scary that this machine “knows what you mean” and “has so much to tell you.” But I think it’s pretty awesome.

Students pull long nights studying for tests, finishing projects and completing homework, but for some students, coffee and energy drinks aren’t enough to stay up and stay focused.
More and more college students are turning to ADHD medication to solve this problem.
Conner Hicks, a freshman undecided major, is prescribed to take ADHD medication by his doctor.
“I use it as prescribed every day, but I tend to use it sometimes just to keep myself awake to get my school work done,” he said.

What are the consequences of Initiative 26?

Wherever I am today, I’m stoked to be here discussing crowd-pleasing topics like unplanned pregnancies, abortion and rape.

I haven’t been left with a line to cross here; I’ve seen a dead fetus plastered on a van drive by me on campus this year — it’s all out in the open now.

I’m not associated with Personhood USA, the Colorado-based group proposing Initiative 26 be passed here in Mississippi, or any other sect labeling itself “pro-life,” nor am I associated with any pro-choice sect.

The university offers assistance to those students who register with Student Disability Services.

Adam Brown was born with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects his left arm and leg.

“I’ve had it for 28 years, well, 27 and some odd months,” he said. “Basically I use my walker and a wheelchair. But I only use my wheelchair if I have to go a long way.”

But this has not stopped Brown from going to college — two colleges, in fact.

A transfer from Mississippi State University, Brown is now a senior journalism major at the University of Mississippi.

Simms Haguewood, a senior education major, donated blood for the first time, and she did not know what she was getting herself into.

She had heard horror stories about past donors fainting and vomiting, and the mere sight of needles was enough to send her over the edge. Therefore, Haguewood walked into the blood drive expecting the worst.

“When I went in the door, I figured it was going to be an awful experience and was already mapping out an escape route or excuse before they even asked me to roll up my sleeve,” she said.

From one liberal to the United States: Repeal Obamacare.
In the U.S., our health care system is broken. Simply tweaking the current system will do nothing to fix this. The largest problems facing our health care system are the sheer number of people living without health insurance, most of whom simply cannot afford it, and the quickly rising costs of medical treatment.

Cancer is a scary word. Most of us know someone who has had it; some of us may have even had it ourselves.
In recent years, there has been a focus on breast cancer, and rightfully so.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, second only to skin cancer.
The statistics on breast cancer are sobering. In the United States, approximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, and in 2010, there was an expected 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed.

“We are hopeful that students, as well as university community members, who want to participate will wear pink and help us ‘Pink Out the Campus,’” assistant dean of students Valeria Ross said.

Since the Pill hit the U.S. market in 1960, millions of women have been prescribed this method of birth control, and more than 12 million American women are currently taking it.

These women are both young and old, single and married. Though they may be from different backgrounds, every woman who has taken the Pill has one thing in common: She is taking a rational and responsible approach to her sexual health and family planning.

To most, the sound of a bug buzzing in the ear warrants a simple wave of the hand without a second thought.

However, this lack of concern may be coming to an end, as the total number of reported West Nile cases in Mississippi continues to rise.
