The Ole Miss basketball team returns to action tonight for the first time since their 64-61 overtime victory this past Friday over Miami. The Rebels are set to face the DePaul Blue Demons in the Big East/SEC Challenge from Allstate Arena in Chicago Illinois. This is the second time Ole Miss has participated in this inter-conference competition. In 2008, the Rebels lost 77-68 to No. 9 Louisville on a neutral site in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mixed among the usual traditions of the first home SEC football game of the season lies a little artistic gem of local culture right around the corner from Vaught-Hemingway.

This weekend, Theatre Oxford is hosting the annual Ten-Minute Play Festival at the Powerhouse on University Avenue.

Fresh off their first 3-0 start since 2005, the Rebels take their undefeated record to Auburn, Ala., for a pair of tough road games this Labor Day weekend.

These 270 minutes of shutout defense, led by reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week senior goalkeeper Alley Ronaldi, were the longest since the first three games of the 2003 season.

Summer has always meant three things to me: humidity, watermelon and Oxford Shakespeare Festival.

Shakespeare festivals are a popular summer commodity for starving artists to find employment for two to three months of fast rehearsals and long runs. Families across the country pack the outdoor theaters to listen to the melodic and poetic script and get a glimpse of what the theatrical world was like in Elizabethan times.

Southern Cal, North Carolina, Tennessee and now Ohio State - all big-time college football programs - in trouble with the NCAA.

There are now rumors swirling that Oregon could be the next program to be investigated by the NCAA.

Voter intimidation is a serious and heinous crime.

Voter intimidation is a serious and heinous crime.

Anyone attempting such a nefarious action should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and according to projectvote.org it carries a maximum penalty for conviction of a fine and no more than one year in prison. Because of such light punishment, voter intimidation has not been even marginally deterred by federal laws.

But a recent article that ran in newspapers across the country raises the question: Just what is the definition of voter intimidation?

I’ve always found sweater vests to be a gross misinterpretation of the original sweater intent; any man wearing a sweater vest is a weak representation of masculinity.

So, as drama continues to unfold in a place where the Head Sweater — Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel — governs and rules, I find the absence of anyone willing to stand up and be a man unsurprising. As a disclaimer, the column that follows is a case study in what happens when you have a chance to tell the NCAA the truth and think it better not to.

Charles Ross, director of the African-American studies department at the University of Mississippi, never dreamed that football would inspire his thesis.

Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Ross studied history at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Following his undergraduate program, Ross returned to Ohio. Unsure of what he wanted to do, he spent almost two years working for the federal government before returning to academics.

I am not a fan of organized labor and unions. Let’s just get that out of the way at the start so the rest of this makes sense.

Over the last week, the media has been calling Wis. Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, which would strip public employee unions in that state of their ability to collectively bargain, “the end of the American organized labor movement as we know it.”

“If you guys want to sleep right now and not wake up [until] July 1st, 2010, go ahead because it’s going to be a big day,” LeBron James teased in a 2008 postgame press conference in New York City, fully aware that ESPN would turn it into a subliminal messaging campaign by replaying it ad nauseam to keep the summer of 2010 warm long enough for even the wittiest of sports journalists to run out of one-liners to describe just how “hot” it is.
