MANNY DIAZ, 37, Texas Defensive Coordinator

As soon as the Ole Miss head coaching position became open this past Monday, former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach’s name was quickly linked with the job, among other former and current head coaches and coordinators.

Currently an announcer and analyst for CBS Sports, Leach boasts 23 years of coaching experience, including an 84-43 record in 10 seasons as the Texas Tech head coach. He brought his patented “Air Raid” offense to Lubbock, and the Red Raiders never had a losing season, reached 10 straight bowl games and shared the Big 12 South Title in 2008.

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Kristi Boxx of the Ole Miss women’s tennis team won a tight first set, but couldn’t hang on against the No. 4 seed, Mallory Burdette of Stanford in the second round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Friday at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.

Growing up, Gunter Brewer listened to stories about his dad.
His father, Billy Brewer, was on the gridiron at Ole Miss, both as a player and a coach. Nearly 20 years after his father was at the helm, another Brewer, Gunter, will roam the sidelines of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time this season. He will do so as the Rebels’ new associate head coach, passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

The hot topic heading into the Big 12 Football Media Days in Dallas this week was the University of Texas’ Longhorn Network and what could possibly become of the conference itself. And it didn’t take long to surface.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman was first to address the media Monday morning and his response to the burning debate seemed to be a repeating one.

The University of Mississippi announced the hiring of Matt Ball on April 15 as the new senior associate director for compliance, a position from which he will oversee all aspects of the athletics compliance office.

Ball will be taking over for David Wells, who is set to retire at the end of May after more than 30 years of service to Ole Miss.

Before coming to Ole Miss, Ball served as the director of compliance at Baylor University and the University of Oklahoma.

Following the Ole Miss tennis team’s win over Tulane on Saturday, Rebel coach Billy Chadwick was already talking about his team’s next opponent: the Memphis Tigers.

“When Memphis plays Ole Miss, it makes their year if they can beat Ole Miss,” Chadwick said. “That’s in every single sport. We know that, so we’ll be ready for them.”

I wrote a short blog entry about the hiring of Ole Miss' new offensive coordinator, David Lee, a few days ago, and on Wednesday even more news surfaced about changes to the Rebels' coaching staff. 

Now in its sixth year, the Japanese Film Series caters to those who are curious about Japan and what it entails.
