The new year is off to a good start for the University of Mississippi’s J.D. Williams Library.
The estates of a recently deceased couple from Northport, Ala., has provided a $1 million donation to the library, according to a press release.
Ole Miss alumnus Oscar Ainsworth, who received his bachelor’s degree in 1945 and master’s degree in 1946, spent approximately 36 years as a member of the math department faculty at the University of Alabama.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) lost former Vice Chancellor A. Wallace Conerly earlier this month.
Conerly, who also served as the dean of the School of Medicine, died Jan. 10 at age 76 due to complications with Parkinson’s Disease.

The Tylertown native served as vice chancellor from 1994 to 2003, spent his last few days in the hospital that bears his name, the Wallace Conerly Critical Care Hospital.
Under his guidance, the medical center saw an expansion to the physical plant, research departments, enrollment and national presence.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze added a familiar name to his football staff Monday, as former Rebel player and assistant coach Matt Luke returns to Oxford as the offensive line coach. Barney Farrar has also been named Assistant Athletics Director for Community Relations.

“For a coach like Matt Luke to return to Ole Miss – a place where he is so loved and loves so dearly – is a home run for us,” Freeze said. “He is tireless recruiter and is a great representative of our university.”

A Mississippi native, inspirational leader and one of the nation’s top rising coaches, Hugh Freeze was the first choice to return championships to Ole Miss Football and will be introduced as the Rebels’ 37th head coach today at 2 p.m. CT at the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

The event is open to the public and will be streamed free online at OleMissSports.com.

While trick-or-treaters were getting candy from different houses, some people decided to attend a different type of event in The Grove on Halloween night.

The Residential Housing Association at the University of Mississippi put on the Fall Carnival in the Grove Monday evening to help raise money through the Halloween spirit.  

Students, children and parents showed up to the event where there were games, inflatables and loud dance music.

The Memory Garden Project has been the dream of many people at the University of Mississippi for years, and it has finally become a reality.

The Ole Miss community is close-knit, and when students lose their lives while enrolled, there is a lasting effect. The memory garden will be a place where students, faculty and staff, alumni and anyone from the Oxford community can reflect on lives lost.

Oxford often finds itself in national headlines, mostly due to the University of Mississippi. The school has been named one of the best places to work and one of the most beautiful campuses. Oxford itself has also been named one of the coolest college towns.

However, there is another accolade Oxford has received that may be surprising to some people.

Over the past 10 years, the college town has been on various lists as one of the top places to retire.

Kevsar Ermin first came to Oxford from Eskisehir, Turkey, while her sister was working with the University of Mississippi. The visits she made to the campus helped convince her to come to the university to study.
Ermin first started with the intensive English program before getting her master’s degree in exercise science. Ermin was working on getting her doctorate in nutrition and kinesiology at the time of her death Friday, following an accident with a vehicle while riding her bicycle.

For Pete Boone, being the athletics director for the University of Mississippi puts him in the same light.  So, who is the Pete Boone we don’t hear about in the media?  What is he actually like? What does he do outside of his job as athletics director at Ole Miss?

With next year comes a presidential election and the mudslinging between candidates has already begun. I don’t know what it is about an election that seems to bring out the heartlessness in people.

When Dickie Scruggs walked up to assistant athletic director for Ole Miss Sports Productions J. Stern and asked him if he wanted actor Russell Crowe to start the Hotty Toddy chant at the football game, Stern’s response was simple — “Hell yeah.”
“Then he handed me his phone, and I was talking to Russell Crowe,” Stern said.
Stern has been working hard for 14 years to get different celebrities to ask the question all Rebel fans love to hear: “Are you ready?”

This summer the Oxford Midtown Farmers Market was certified by the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce.
The certificate gives recognition to the farmers market by other businesses, meaning the market meets the standards of a small business or a large company.
As part of its certification program, the market is considered a thriving business and capable of running itself.

When executive coordinator to the chancellor Kim Barnes gets in at 7:30 a.m., he is already there. Barnes said there is no set time for him to leave, either, with events often keeping him on campus late.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Almost as soon as it began, former baseball star Roger Clemens' perjury trial ended Thursday - in a mistrial the judge blamed on prosecutors and said a "first-year law student" would have known to avoid.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton left the question of a new trial up in the air. But he called a halt to the trial under way after prosecutors showed jurors evidence that he had ruled out - videotaped revelations that a teammate had said he'd told his wife Clemens confessed to using a drug.

More than 200 students in the state of Mississippi will have to find new ways to help pay for college. On April 14, the U.S. Congress passed legislation concerning the national budget. Several programs did not receive the funding they needed to continue operations, including the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship.

Not many businesses have survived long enough to celebrate their centennial anniversary. The Daily Mississippian has lasted through 18 presidents and six wars, and is one of the oldest and largest student newspapers in the United States.

Those young journalists have gone on to do great things, with many working for newspapers, magazines and other media around the world.

In 1911, students at the University of Mississippi attempted to publish a student newspaper for the third time, and on Oct. 14 — almost a month before the start of the Chevorlet Automobile company — The Mississippian was born, with Forrest Cooper and Rad H. Reed as the first editors-in-chief. 

Since then, The Mississippian has survived through 18 presidents, six wars and countless other events.

Without hesitation, Thompson goes right to the spot he’s looking for and pulls out a signed copy of famed Mississippi writer Willie Morris’ “North Toward Home.”

Thompson, a senior writer for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine, read the book as a 10th grader while recovering from a case of mononucleosis.
