If you use Google or Wikipedia, you may be familiar with something called SOPA. No, it’s not a national debate about Mexican soup. SOPA is legislation intended to censor the Internet, essentially suspending the constitutional rights of American citizens and corporations.

There’s a reason it was initially unknown to the public; when people realize their liberty is being stripped away they stand up for themselves. Without grassroots efforts by citizens and activists, SOPA would have become law. Fortunately, it did not.

In President Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address, he carried a theme through the speech, which earned him several standing ovations and should have earned whoever wrote that speech a significant raise.

In response to Trenton Winford’s “Pre-existing conditions unfortunate, but should not be covered.”

The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address one of America’s most complex issues. This short, one-sided article ignores aspects of the ACA that act to protect not just patients, but insurance companies as well.

By the late 1990s, the University of Mississippi had already enrolled its first black student, cheered on its first black student-athlete, elected its first black Miss Ole Miss and crowned its first black Miss University. I’m sick as I write this. My back aches, my shoulders are tense and I’ve found myself coughing up very interesting variations of the color green. Simply put, my body hates me right now. I don’t know what I did to upset it, but it is clearly getting its point across that it is very, very displeased with me.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

The re-trial of David Jackson Williams, which was originally scheduled for February, has been changed to July 31.

Williams was convicted in 2007 for the murder of Ole Miss student Demetria Bracey.

In November 2010, the Mississippi Supreme Court overturned the guilty verdict and Williams was released on a $100,000 bond. The Supreme Court overturned the verdict because the defense was barred from using evidence and jury instruction that supported an assisted suicide cause of death.

Voters take their issues pretty seriously. There are family values, the economy, the Constitution, taxes and personal freedom, just to name a few. This is largely why the Republican Party has surged in the past few years, and 2012 was supposed to shake things up even more.

Despite all the force behind the GOP, it somehow chose incredibly unimpressive candidates. The party once known for the Reagan Revolution just doesn’t have much going for it. Sure, there’s the Tea Party, but we’re still paying for a decade and a half of bad decisions.

On Monday, in a unanimous 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court held that police must obtain a warrant before using a global positioning system to track suspects.

Justice Samuel Alito focused on the physical nature of attaching a GPS device to a suspect’s vehicle.

Frankly, this is not a surprising outcome. One can easily imagine a variety of ways in which police officers maneuver themselves in order to attach these devices to cars.

Eminent domain, also known as Initiative 31, has some scratching their heads on what it means, even after it passed with a landslide vote in the Nov. 8 election.

Eminent domain, also known as Initiative 31, has some scratching their heads on what it means, even after it passed with a landslide vote in the Nov. 8 election.

Eminent domain issues have had a tumultuous history in the state. For example, in 2001, with the Canton Nissan plant, the state government tried to take the private land of Madison County resident Lorenzo Archie through the use of eminent domain and sell it to Nissan. Archie fought the state from taking his land and won.

On Wednesday, Associated Student Body President Taylor McGraw rejected legislation for the Green Fund, which would have initiated student-led environmental sustainability projects in addition to the university’s sustainability initiatives.

The legislation, which was approved by the ASB Senate, stated the university’s current model for sustainability projects were unattainable unless a consistent source of funding was made available.

Adam Blackwell says Rep. Frank has simply chosen to retire after a successful legislative career.

Democrats in Congress will lose a strong ally at the end of the term, with the retirement of Representative Barney Frank. A longtime liberal Democrat from Massachusetts, Frank’s retirement comes at a time when his district’s boundaries are being redrawn, and when he is entering old age, currently 71 years old.

There's a new scandal involving a politcan, but this time it's  a Twitter controversy Nixon would be proud of.

Well at least this time a scandal involving a politician, a young girl and a Twitter account didn’t involve pictures of someone’s junk. However, when 18-year-old high school senior Emma Sullivan was visiting the Kansas state capital and tweeted her thoughts about Governor Sam Brownback, namely that she thought “he sucked,” the kerfuffle that ensued was unimaginable.

Why is Newt Gingrich running for president?

As Republicans are hopping off the Herman Cain train, former Speaker Newt Gingrich is gaining momentum in the current GOP presidential field. This marks a huge turnaround from a month ago, when experts were declaring Gingrich’s political aspirations a thing of the past. But as Republicans start to jump on the Gingrich bandwagon, they need to analyze who they’re really supporting.

In order to keep the student body aware of what is being done by their elected officials, the Associated Student Body at the University of Mississippi is giving a “State of the Union” today in front of the, you guessed it, Student Union.

The address begins at noon and will be given by ASB President Taylor McGraw, Vice President Abby Olivier and Associate Dean of Students Melinda Pullen Carlson.
