What is not publicized is how much it costs to buy all the Scantrons, how much it costs to put on the affair and to create the new meet and greet.
That money comes from the ASB’s yearly budget and is allotted by its treasurer, John James.
Though James remains the acting treasurer, he is currently working in Houston in an accounting internship.

Spring allocations are a chance for organizations that did not receive funding in the fall to apply or reapply for money.

This year the ASB set aside $50,000 for allocations, up from approximately $32,000 from the 2010-2011 academic year.

“I was glad we were able to increase our allocations this year, it was by far the highest level ever,” ASB president Taylor McGraw said.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

Two major campus issues were brought up Tuesday night during the Associated Students Body Senate meeting at the University of Mississippi.

Resolution 12-1, the re-written green fund legislation saw the floor first. Senator Will Bedwell, along with green fund proponents Zach Jarjoura and Taylor Cook, explained the minor changes to the legislation that were requested by ASB president Taylor McGraw after his veto of the original legislation in December.

The Associated Student Body Senate will once again view legislation in support of the green fund tonight.
The initial legislation brought up in late November saw a setback after making it to the desk of ASB president Taylor McGraw, who vetoed the legislation.
McGraw said “mandatory student fees for narrow purposes” was his greatest concern.

At least one thing can be said for former Gov. Haley Barbour: the man sure knows how to make an exit. Before leaving office this month, Barbour pardoned more than 200 convicted criminals, in a move that left the new regime in Jackson confused and outraged.

They weren’t the only ones; the public outcry following the pardons was deafening. While many of the pardons now hang in judicial limbo, one question has yet to be answered: what’s so wrong with the pardons?

Of course I have to start the semester off with a bang. I tried writing about why I love spring semester so much more than fall semester, but it just wasn’t working out. The more I tried to write, the more I wanted to talk politics. It’s my thing; politics is my passion.

With his landslide victory in the South Carolina primary last week, Newt Gingrich rebounded from what seemed like a slowly dying campaign after hard losses in Iowa and New Hampshire. As former Speaker Gingrich is once again the national frontrunner, Republican voters should investigate his record and ask themselves if he is truly representative of the Republican Party.

To the Editor:

When I first heard the news that the Green Fund legislation had been referred back to Senate after passing on Tuesday night, I was shocked. I was even more shocked considering that neither I, Senator Will Bedwell, nor Taylor Cook (Campus for Clean Energy) received the news from Taylor McGraw. Instead, first news came from The DM, who contacted Taylor Cook to comment on the Green Fund legislation’s rejection.

Why is Newt Gingrich running for president?

As Republicans are hopping off the Herman Cain train, former Speaker Newt Gingrich is gaining momentum in the current GOP presidential field. This marks a huge turnaround from a month ago, when experts were declaring Gingrich’s political aspirations a thing of the past. But as Republicans start to jump on the Gingrich bandwagon, they need to analyze who they’re really supporting.

Associated Student Body President Taylor McGraw has been named a Rhodes Scholarship finalist.

McGraw, whose brother was nominated this past year, was the only University of Mississippi student nominated this year.

“I think I deserve (the scholarship); I think a lot of people deserve it,” he said. “Really, anybody who’s a finalist deserves it and could benefit from it.”

The public policy major said the program he selected is evidence-based social intervention.
