In 1988, Congress passed the Drug-Free Workplace Act, which requires federal contractors and grantees to provide drug-free workplaces in order to receive a contract or grant. Then in 1989, the Supreme Court ruled that it is constitutional for private railroad companies to require employees to test negative for use of drugs upon hire and return from extended leave.

Eminent domain, also known as Initiative 31, has some scratching their heads on what it means, even after it passed with a landslide vote in the Nov. 8 election.

Eminent domain, also known as Initiative 31, has some scratching their heads on what it means, even after it passed with a landslide vote in the Nov. 8 election.

Eminent domain issues have had a tumultuous history in the state. For example, in 2001, with the Canton Nissan plant, the state government tried to take the private land of Madison County resident Lorenzo Archie through the use of eminent domain and sell it to Nissan. Archie fought the state from taking his land and won.

The dean of the School of Education’s big dream comes in a small package — elementary school students.
David Rock hopes to open up a pre-K through fifth grade school, which he said would benefit both the local school districts and the School of Education.
Though it is still unclear where the initial funding to build the school would come from, funding to operate the school on a daily basis would be paid in part by local school districts and in part by the School of Education.

What's behind President Obama's new student loan plan?

According to Kimberly Hefling of The Huffington Post, student loan debt in the United States recently surpassed the trillion-dollar mark. Under Obama’s plan, anyone’s student loan payback would be no more than 10 percent of discretionary income, as opposed to 15 percent, and loans would be forgiven after 20 years instead of 25.

This does not apply to those already in default or to loans from private institutions, like banks, which is great news for me but not for a large majority of that trillion-dollar debt.

This is the first in a four-part series highlighting important issues that will be on Tuesday’s ballot. This article will deal with Intiative 31 which talks about Eminent Domain. Tomorrow will deal with Initiative 27, which talks about Voter Identification.

While some people may not know or understand eminent domain laws in Mississippi, for others it is a huge deal.

“As of now, eminent domain allows government to take private property from people who are not willing to sell their land directly to the private corporation and use it as economic development,” Cy Rosenblatt, political science professor, said.

People for this initiative feel like the government should not be able to take private land and hand it over to private corporations.

The Downtown Parking Advisory Commission will be styled after the Stake Holder Committee created in Tacoma, Wash., to deal with fairly similar downtown parking issues.

When Kurt Cobain screamed “Here we are now/entertain us” in 1991, he wasn’t exactly looking for a hit. He wasn’t looking for accolades; he wasn’t looking to make some grand statement.
Flash forward 20 years later, and comedian Jon Stewart is hosting a townhall-style forum with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig.

Americans hold three rights more dearly than any other: life, liberty and property.

Any action by an individual or government to restrict or violate these rights raises harsh criticism from the general public.

On the other hand, we as Americans realize that individuals must give the government a little leeway on our rights to best serve the citizenry.

One such place that we give leeway is on the topic of eminent domain.

Just after University of Mississippi classes started Thursday morning, students and alumni were greeted with a message from Chancellor Dan Jones.

It was not a message hoping the students were having a great year thus far, nor was it congratulatory on the freshman class for breaking an ACT record; rather, it was addressing the group Forward Rebels.

Multiple vendors who lined the sidewalk and alleyways of the Square will no longer be present for midnight snacks.

“We don’t want everyone that can cook a turkey leg to sell on the Square,” Mayor George “Pat” Patterson said.

The vendors, like restaurants, are required to obtain a license. Patterson said this occurs every year.

I joined the Greek system here with a certain sense of reluctance, unsure of what my commitment to a fraternity would mean.

However, in the two years I was in a fraternity, I met many of my closest friends and grew as a person through countless positive experiences. This is why I was so frustrated by what I saw and heard in my first recruitment process as a member this past fall. It might be because I am so naive that I never considered why fraternities and sororities are so disproportionately white.

Poise, charisma, substance and electability.

These are four essential qualities any successful presidential candidate must have. In the primary for the 2012 Republican nomination of president, only one candidate has these attributes. That candidate is former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After months of public nastiness and private negotiations, of court filings and rulings, of players and owners squabbling over more than $9 billion a year, NFL fans finally saw the handshake and heard the words they awaited: "Football's back."

Since the beginning of the worldwide economic downturn of the late 2000s, few countries have been hurt as greatly as Greece.
