In November 2008, by a slim majority, California voters instituted “Prop 8,” a constitutional amendment that says “only marriage between a man and a woman will be recognized in California.”
Voter turnout was large at nearly 80 percent. Many expected California, typically a leader in liberal, social movements, to shut down the proposition. When that did not happen, reactions varied greatly.

Disclaimer: Yes, I know I’m speaking in a lot of generalizations here. Yes, I know that not all women enjoy nauseatingly sappy and emotionally manipulative chick flicks, but most of them do. So there.
That dreadful holiday the non-singles among us know as Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I know exactly what you’ll all be doing to celebrate: sitting around watching sappy romance movies.
Because I’ll be sitting home alone, I’ll just choose to believe the rest of you will be, too.

In the background, the sound of children playing drowns out director Alan Arriveé’s voice.

“My daughter’s friends are over, and we just got a new puppy,” he said. “I guess now is as good of time as any to talk.”

In the background, the sound of children playing drowns out director Alan Arriveé’s voice.

“My daughter’s friends are over, and we just got a new puppy,” he said. “I guess now is as good of time as any to talk.”

Arriveé is a straight shooter. His words come out crisp and clear. He speaks with no accent and fills a conversation on film with all the technical jargon that comes with being in the filmmaking industry for years. One gets the feeling that he was worked for those words.

The growing industry of retail medicine has brought the Clinic at Walmart to Oxford.

Retail medicine, an industry composed of small health care facilities in retail stores with pharmacies, has been providing convenient, affordable and timely access to health services since the first clinic opened in 2000.

The Clinic at Walmart in Oxford has a staff of two nurse practitioners, including Merilyn Charlton, who said the idea to bring the national trend to the Oxford Walmart came about a year ago.

Last spring I searched through a bookshelf at Goodwill looking for new material. I bought a stack of books, read the ones that most interested me and put the others aside.

I took many classes that spring semester, finding my Psychology 201 course most intriguing, but despite being immensely interested in the material, I found myself longing for a better articulation of how psychology could be applied to my everyday life.

In response to Trenton Winford’s “Pre-existing conditions unfortunate, but should not be covered.”

The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address one of America’s most complex issues. This short, one-sided article ignores aspects of the ACA that act to protect not just patients, but insurance companies as well.

In the fall, several activist groups were in a tizzy regarding an episode of “Glee,” in which two leading couples (one heterosexual couple and one same-sex couple) dealt with the issues leading up to and arising from their first sexual encounters.

It’s always interesting how these things work out. The level of activism and outrage is typically proportional to how many people are driven to watch the episode to see what all the hullabaloo is about.

By the late 1990s, the University of Mississippi had already enrolled its first black student, cheered on its first black student-athlete, elected its first black Miss Ole Miss and crowned its first black Miss University. However, at the turn of the millennium the students had yet to be led by a black Associated Student Body president.

John has an unfortunate story. He and his wife want to start a family, so they began searching for a house. The house they end up buying has a few problems, but it is a good starter house. The roof leaks, the cabinets need to be replaced and the foundation has some problems.

After buying the house, like any responsible couple, they shopped for home insurance. They were told that the foundation will need to be repaired within the next year, so no insurance plan would cover the home’s foundation at a price John could afford.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

Lately, some of the Republican candidates have managed to talk themselves into a hole concerning welfare and those living in poverty. Newt Gingrich, probably the most offensive on the subject, accused all poor people of not having the habit of “showing up on Monday,” implying that those living below the poverty line simply do not work as a result of laziness. He said, “Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works.”

The re-trial of David Jackson Williams, which was originally scheduled for February, has been changed to July 31.

Williams was convicted in 2007 for the murder of Ole Miss student Demetria Bracey.

In November 2010, the Mississippi Supreme Court overturned the guilty verdict and Williams was released on a $100,000 bond. The Supreme Court overturned the verdict because the defense was barred from using evidence and jury instruction that supported an assisted suicide cause of death.

Despite all the force behind the GOP, it somehow chose incredibly unimpressive candidates. The party once known for the Reagan Revolution just doesn’t have much going for it. Sure, there’s the Tea Party, but we’re still paying for a decade and a half of bad decisions.

The infamous term “bad economy” became all too real for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Earlier this month, 112 UMMC employees were laid off from work due to a downturn in the economy. James Keeton, vice chancellor of affairs, predicts the loss of UMMC’s employees will save the medical center $12 million annually, according to The Clarion-Ledger. UMMC’s finances were reported to have been in the red last year, which prompted the sudden reduction in jobs.

With his landslide victory in the South Carolina primary last week, Newt Gingrich rebounded from what seemed like a slowly dying campaign after hard losses in Iowa and New Hampshire. As former Speaker Gingrich is once again the national frontrunner, Republican voters should investigate his record and ask themselves if he is truly representative of the Republican Party.

The city of Oxford will see a new and improved farmer’s market in May of next year. Oxford has been deemed a food desert by the USDA, meaning low-income families are cut short of having healthy eating options. But now there’s hope that the newly established access to fresh produce, with the farmer’s market, will benefit those families and the city.
