Mike Leach talks his Air Raid offense and his possible interest in the Ole Miss head coaching position. CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman and ESPN's Edward Ashoff look at the fit of Leach at Oxford and other possible alternatives for both Leach and Ole Miss. Also, expect a graphic of Leach's offensive success from Kentucky and Oklahoma, where he was offensive coordinator, to his 10-year tenure at Texas Tech.

With a few days of reflection, commentary on Tuesday’s Internet outage.

It is approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday when I notice the Internet connection at the Student Media Center is down. I ask the newsroom, and learn that this is a campus-wide problem.

“Let me tweet that,” I say. Of course, I then remember I’m in the Dark Ages with my cell phone and the Internet is down, so I scratch that idea.

Thirty minutes later, I get the RebAlert letting me know that the problem is with AT&T in Jackson.

Newly elected Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant spent a day in Oxford’s Industrial Park Tuesday, touring what he called two “American icons.”

Bryant visited the city’s Caterpillar and Winchester plants.

“How fortunate we are to have both of these manufacturing plants,” Bryant said. “I’m here to see and encourage the facilities. We want to thank them and see if there is anything we can do to help their process.”

If you use Google or Wikipedia, you may be familiar with something called SOPA. No, it’s not a national debate about Mexican soup. SOPA is legislation intended to censor the Internet, essentially suspending the constitutional rights of American citizens and corporations.

There’s a reason it was initially unknown to the public; when people realize their liberty is being stripped away they stand up for themselves. Without grassroots efforts by citizens and activists, SOPA would have become law. Fortunately, it did not.

Now that National Signing Day has come and gone, recruiting junkies only have one thing left to do: wonder.

Those wonderers will sit around and ask themselves if Hugh Freeze’s recruiting class was good enough or if it will be something that ruins his career at Ole Miss, much like it did Houston Nutt.

Sophomore Vivian Vlaar became an Ole Miss Rebel Netter at the age of 17.

Although young, her game was like that of a seasoned veteran. In her freshman season, Vlaar compiled a 25-9 overall singles record, which included a 12-match win streak from Jan. 14 to March 6. Vlaar also posted a winning record in doubles at 11-9.

I’ve tried to discuss issues specifically pertaining to Mississippi lately. Of course, it’s important that we consider global and national issues, but I think state issues are extraordinarily important, especially in a time when our newly elected officials are entering office.

There’s a new radio station in town covering all things Ole Miss sports in an innovative way that aims to make every aspect of athletics more accessible.
Rebel Sports Radio launched on Nov. 10, 2011, about a week before the Rebels were scheduled to face off against the LSU Tigers. The new station is the first in a growing trend of Internet radio to cover Ole Miss sports exclusively, 24 hours a day.

Quarterback

Signees: Bo Wallace, Maikhail Miller (Greyshirt from last year’s class)

Grade: C+

Ole Miss failed to sign a true high school quarterback in this class, but brought in the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year in Bo Wallace who has three years of eligibility left. Miller greyshirted from the 2011 class and enrolled in January. He’s a developmental player who will need time before competing for the starting job. Wallace should immediately compete for the starting job, but it hurt to not land either Anthony Alford or Jeremy Liggins, who committed to Southern Miss and LSU, respectively.

In response to Trenton Winford’s “Pre-existing conditions unfortunate, but should not be covered.”

The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address one of America’s most complex issues. This short, one-sided article ignores aspects of the ACA that act to protect not just patients, but insurance companies as well.

In the fall, several activist groups were in a tizzy regarding an episode of “Glee,” in which two leading couples (one heterosexual couple and one same-sex couple) dealt with the issues leading up to and arising from their first sexual encounters.

In the fall, several activist groups were in a tizzy regarding an episode of “Glee,” in which two leading couples (one heterosexual couple and one same-sex couple) dealt with the issues leading up to and arising from their first sexual encounters.

It’s always interesting how these things work out. The level of activism and outrage is typically proportional to how many people are driven to watch the episode to see what all the hullabaloo is about.

By the late 1990s, the University of Mississippi had already enrolled its first black student, cheered on its first black student-athlete, elected its first black Miss Ole Miss and crowned its first black Miss University. However, at the turn of the millennium the students had yet to be led by a black Associated Student Body president.

A little past midnight, a bleeding sophomore collapsed to the floor holding his stomach. He was stabbed in his stomach, lower abdomen, under his left eye and behind his ear. His drunken roommate and former fraternity brother stood over him with a knife in his hand as the third roommate dialed 911. The Lafayette police arrived to find the two men fighting tooth and nail. After a critical week-long stay in Baptist Memorial Hospital, the 20-year-old English major withdrew from the University of Mississippi and returned to his home in Austin, Texas. That was Feb. 25, 2007, nearly five years ago to this day.

When the Ole Miss football team got back to Oxford after a 31-3 loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, most of the team turned their attention to the offseason and who would be named their new head coach, but freshman Senquez Golson turned his attention to baseball and the friendly confines of Oxford/University Stadium at Swayze Field.

In a world of social media craze, we are becoming so unbelievably exposed to different sources of information that we often neglect to realize what we are taking in. Recently, informational or opinionated “viral” YouTube video links have been posted to Facebook walls and Twitter feeds. Most college students have seen the “Religion versus Jesus” video in the past month or two, and similar videos are spreading around our social media outlets like wildfire. I saw a link to another one of these videos — this time, though, I watched it.
