As I come closer to the end of my journey at Ole Miss and move into the professional world, I have become exceedingly thoughtful about my communication with friends, family and colleagues, or the lack thereof. 

I have recently become puzzled by the fact that I only get to know some people on the surface. I often find myself questioning whether or not I have a desire to get to know people better, or is it that we live in a society where social networks inhibit our ability to get to know people beyond what meets the eye? 

It’s my first last column of my first last semester of college! Or is it my last first column? Last first semester? Last last? Man, I dunno. Obviously, we’re off to a great start already.

Well at least this time a scandal involving a politician, a young girl and a Twitter account didn’t involve pictures of someone’s junk. However, when 18-year-old high school senior Emma Sullivan was visiting the Kansas state capital and tweeted her thoughts about Governor Sam Brownback, namely that she thought “he sucked,” the kerfuffle that ensued was unimaginable. 

Gossip and hot topics always swirl around the law school at the start of the semester. 

Few of those things fervently discussed last through the first month of school, but this year, one thing has continued to be on the tongues and lips of the majority: parking. 

Our new facility cost $50 million and rumor has it the donors envisioned a parking spot for every student. But did they imagine having to share those parking spots with thousands of other commuter students? Or with Fraternity Row?

How’d you like to get $10,000 or more per tweet? 

Well, according to an article in The Clarion Ledger, if your last name is along the lines of Kardashian, Spelling or Dogg, you just might be able to pull it off.

It seems Twitter is revolutionizing the way merchants hawk their wares. Since their inception some five years ago, the online avenue for all things “tweetable” has transformed the way people shop, vote and start revolutions.

Personally, my mother has often mocked that we should have bought stock in Apple long ago, with the numerous iPods, iBooks, iPhones and so on that have wandered through our house.

As Twitter usage becomes more widespread among student-athletes, athletic departments across the country are coming to an agreement — Twitter is the devil.

First banned last year at Boise State by head football coach Chris Petersen, several other programs around the country, including Kansas, South Carolina, St. John’s, Villanova and Mississippi State, have all decided to pull the plug on the social media website.

For a generation that is shaped and characterized by the availability of technology, we sure can miss a lot of news.
