In November 2008, by a slim majority, California voters instituted “Prop 8,” a constitutional amendment that says “only marriage between a man and a woman will be recognized in California.”
Voter turnout was large at nearly 80 percent. Many expected California, typically a leader in liberal, social movements, to shut down the proposition. When that did not happen, reactions varied greatly.

I’ve tried to discuss issues specifically pertaining to Mississippi lately. Of course, it’s important that we consider global and national issues, but I think state issues are extraordinarily important, especially in a time when our newly elected officials are entering office.

Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun; no one ever told me about the “pink slime.”

In President Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address, he carried a theme through the speech, which earned him several standing ovations and should have earned whoever wrote that speech a significant raise.

The 2008 presidential election between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama was purported to be about hope and change; the next president was going to change the status quo from a gridlocked Washington to a Washington that worked for the American people, rather than lobbyists and peddlers like Newt Gingrich, corporations and Wall Street. But the voters eventually got what they deserved.

Chances are, most women reading this column are no strangers to a phenomenon that I find rather ridiculous. No matter how often it happens, it still makes me feel uncomfortable, self-conscious and sometimes, even threatened.

Chances are, most women reading this column are no strangers to a phenomenon that I find rather ridiculous. No matter how often it happens, it still makes me feel uncomfortable, self-conscious and sometimes, even threatened.

What is this phenomenon, you ask? It is the “catcall” – the seemingly harmless whistle that certain “breeds” of men use when they think a passing girl is attractive, or when they just want to be obnoxious.

As of 2011, Mississippi was the most obese state in the nation. That makes six years that Mississippi has garnered this “honor.”

As of 2011, Mississippi was the most obese state in the nation. That makes six years that Mississippi has garnered this “honor.”

Yet, we see that the state of Mississippi and its leadership have not come up with a sustainable, successful plan to reverse this trend.

At the end of his tenure as governor, Hayley Barbour pardoned 200 felons as one of his last official acts. This act, uncommon on such a large scale, will likely have far-reaching implications on Mississippi’s constitutional rules regarding pardons. On top of that, Atty. Gen. Jim Hood believes that at least 156 of the pardons do not meet constitutional requirements and has launched an investigation.

Of course I have to start the semester off with a bang. I tried writing about why I love spring semester so much more than fall semester, but it just wasn’t working out. The more I tried to write, the more I wanted to talk politics. It’s my thing; politics is my passion.

Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech nearly 49 years ago, rallying over 200,000 civil rights supporters in Washington, D.C., during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Just over a week ago, Kelly Shannon and a group of University of Mississippi students were recognized for their efforts, this time through community service in King’s name.
King’s legacy lives on through Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and observed as far away as Hiroshima.

Is the government watching you?

Big Brother is watching you. People have always been paranoid about the power of government. But with the recent rejection of the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, the idea of Big Brother taking you in the middle of the night has become more real.

Lucus Jackson wears no jersey where he works on the sidelines, getting Gatorade for the players and arriving at football games five hours early to make sure the cups, towels and bandages are ready.
Even though he isn’t a player on the field, Jackson, a student athletic trainer with the football team, participates on the larger playing field of life, making service his emphasis.
With so much emphasis on the losing football season and coaching and other leadership changes, Jackson’s role out of the spotlight and on the sidelines shines brightly.

What is the GOP doing to bring in Latino voters?

As I was walking around campus this week, I saw a student wearing a t-shirt that said “God Bless Arizona.” He was applauding Arizona for its controversial immigration law that was signed by Governor Jan Brewer last year.

It is considered the most anti-illegal immigrant measure passed in recent history, partly due to the legislation’s allowance of racial profiling, which was recently ruled unconstitutional.

James Meredith made history in October 1962 when he became the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Along with the major step forward, however, came the infamous rioting that tarnished the university’s reputation for decades.

Our student body has gained a new mindset since then, digging our university out of a hole the students put us in. Although we have made great strides, part of our reputation is still stained by this rioting.

Veterans Day is a day to remember that everything we hold dear in the United States, we owe to the service of others.

The University of Mississippi took a moment to honor these men and women who sacrificed for us with its annual Veterans Day ceremony in the Paris-Yates Chapel. The event consisted of the University Men’s Glee choir and a guest speaker, Rhea Tannehill Jr.

While legal pundits will be debating the failure of Initiative 26, another very important issue concerning personal privacy rights is being argued in front of the nation’s highest court.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing arguments about whether GPS tracking without a warrant is constitutional or not. The present case, the United States v. Jones, is set to become a landmark case in terms of the relationship between technology and Fourth Amendment rights.
