Attlee Breland speaks out against the Personhood Amendment during a "No on 26" rally in front of the Oxford Courthouse on Wednesday. Breland joined several dozen protesters who gathered to urge citizens to vote "no" on Amendment 26, warning of the "unintended consequences" for women's health if the amendment passes.

From the Office of the Chancellor:

Dear Ole Miss Family,

September 26, 2011

As we close in on the midway point of another semester there a quite a few hot topics that students are talking about around the campus. Parking, our football team, free scantrons, Amendment 26 and when the exact date that it will become fashionable again to wear leggings, XXXXL sweatshirts and rain boots. I'm thinking mid-October.

That said, I am going to take a different route, and talk about an issue that has been untouched as of yet by the campus water-cooler. Intramurals. I'm sticking to the important issues see?

Lately, some of the Republican candidates have managed to talk themselves into a hole concerning welfare and those living in poverty. Newt Gingrich, probably the most offensive on the subject, accused all poor people of not having the habit of “showing up on Monday,” implying that those living below the poverty line simply do not work as a result of laziness. He said, “Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works.”

Throughout the day, there is a promotion aired on Rebel Radio that hails Oxford as the “quintessential college town,” a statement that’s hard to argue with. Part of having a great college town is having a thriving arts scene, which we have.

Well, it’s a new year and a new semester, and for me, apparently, a new addiction, and I’m not sure that I’m all that happy about it.

Oxford resident Janice Key was involved in a one-car accident on Old Taylor Road by the South parking lot. Key’s father, John, said her steering wheel was broken, which caused her to lose control of the car. The car went down the ravine by the parking lot, before being pulled out by Shivers towing company. Shivers was the second towing company called to the scene.

Mississippi politics just got really red.

To the Editor:

The first third of Trenton Winford’s column, “College isn’t for everyone,” is hogwash.

I stopped reading after this draconian quip: “Similarly, a high school senior can want to be a college student more than anything, but that doesn’t mean it is what he or she should be.”

I’m all for options in life, but don’t you dare tell any person or group of persons what they should or shouldn’t be.

How involved are you in the political process?

I will be honest with you. Up until this year, I had never been extremely involved in political campaigns. Even though I always believed that exercising your right to vote is part of your civic duty as a citizen of the United States (I have never missed an election), I had never volunteered my time to campaign for (or against) a political candidate or ballot initiative.
