As we close in on the midway point of another semester there a quite a few hot topics that students are talking about around the campus. Parking, our football team, free scantrons, Amendment 26 and when the exact date that it will become fashionable again to wear leggings, XXXXL sweatshirts and rain boots. I'm thinking mid-October.

That said, I am going to take a different route, and talk about an issue that has been untouched as of yet by the campus water-cooler. Intramurals. I'm sticking to the important issues see?

He rushed for over 1,200 yards as a junior at the running back position. Listed as an athlete, he could play in the defensive secondary or at running back for the Rebels.

Pitchers:

While there is still a lot to be determined in this young pitching staff, one thing is clear: there is depth. The weekend starters are not yet set, but it looks as though freshman Bobby Wahl and senior R.J. Hively will take the hill on Fridays and Saturdays, respectively, for the Rebels. The Sunday spot seems to be down to three guys, but it’s anyone’s battle at the start of spring practice.

“Coach (Mike Bianco) has said that whoever performs the best is going to get the weekend spots, so we’ll see what happens,” Wahl said.

Sophomore Mike Mayers may have a slight lead at the moment with a season of SEC experience under his belt. However, freshmen Josh Laxer and Hawtin Buchanan, as well as juniors Tanner Bailey and Dylan Chavez, are right there in the mix. Look for Mayers to take the Sunday spot to start the season with two of the other four pitchers to fill the mid-week spots.

“(Mayers’) slider is something he’s worked on since last year,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “I think it’s just normal progression. He pitched over 50 innings last season, which is a ton for a freshman. The slider is better, but I think he’s better all around.”

Junior Brett Huber will be counted on in the late innings of the game and fill the closer’s role as he did his freshman year.

“Right now, I’m just working on commanding the strike zone and stuff like that,” Huber said. “I’m just working on being more consistent out there. Last year I had some problems with that.”

They say the college football season never really ends. When the games are over and a champion is crowned, coaching searches and recruiting take center stage in college football news. However, recruiting and the way it is currently handled by all parties involved makes it completely irrelevant.

They say the college football season never really ends. When the games are over and a champion is crowned, coaching searches and recruiting take center stage in college football news. However, recruiting and the way it is currently handled by all parties involved makes it completely irrelevant.

First off, player ratings make no sense and do not really capture a recruit’s true potential. If you don’t believe me, let’s look at past Ole Miss players as incoming recruits. Some of the Rebs’ best players were not highly rated or recruited.

Heisman Trophy winner and two-time National Champion Johnny Rodgers visited the University of Mississippi this past weekend.

On his itinerary, in addition to attending Saturday’s Ole Miss-Alabama game, was visiting Meek School of Journalism and New Media Dean H.W. The state of Mississippi is strengthening its rules on sports agents interactions with players.
The Secretary of State’s office announced this past summer the revisions that have been made to the Uniform Athlete Agents act, or the laws which govern sports agent operating in the state.
The office said that this change was made to “provide greater protection to our student athletes.”

The butterflies in the stomach, the rush of those adolescent hormones — it’s a hallmark of those tumultuous early teenage years.

For a few of us, that first crush results in bliss; however, for the rest of us, it’s a heartbreaker. For 15-year-old Larry King, it killed him.

Michael White left for a head coaching position at Louisiana Tech, Owen Miller to become the head coach at Gulfport High School and Torrey Ward to pursue other coaching opportunities. This is the second of a three-part series, introducing the three new assistant basketball coaches.

After being an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State University for eight seasons, Al Pinkins, one of the rising young coaches in the profession, was named to the same position at Ole Miss in April.

He joins head coach Andy Kennedy and new assistant coaches Bill Armstrong and Sergio Rouco on the bench this season. From his past playing and coaching experience, Pinkins brings deep recruiting ties in the South and a reputation for developing post players.

The NCAA is not new to making enemies, but they’ve made two new ones.

University of Colorado at Boulder’s two most infamous non-graduates, Matt Stone and Trey Parker – the minds behind the television series South Park – chose to put the NCAA under the spotlight of their social commentary in the show’s 15th season.

Thompson had much to say about the Ole Miss atheltics brand and how he plans to grow it in the future. Unfortunately, thanks to a snafu by yours truly and a dead laptop, the transcript of this interview never saw the light of day until now. While this interview took place nearly a month ago, it nevertheless provides quality insight into Thompson's philosophy in regard to marketing Rebel athletics.

Dear readers, thanks for making time for me today.

I hope you don’t mind me hiding under the covers of this newspaper — it’s been some time since my last confession, and after comparing my life to the Honor Code described in this column, I’m afraid I sin like a champion.

On the lack of basketball attendance...
When I was here from 1989-2001, that Coliseum was crazy; it was nuts. I remember waiting in line to get tickets. I remember waiting in line to get into the game, I remember wanting to get there early.
