What's next for our Atheltics program?

At an afternoon press conference Monday, Athletic Director Pete Boone announced that coach Houston Nutt will not return next season, and that he himself would resign in 2012.

“When coach Nutt arrived four years ago, I said publicly he would be the last coach I would hire,” Boone said. “I meant it.”

Though Boone will retain his current position until sometime next year, he will not have a part in choosing our next head football coach.

Where do you stand on the Ole Miss athletics program?

While roaming a music festival Saturday, a friend of mine turned and asked me two questions: “What is the difference between ignorance and apathy?” followed by, “What is the score of the Ole Miss vs. Arkansas game?”

“I don’t know, and I don’t care,” I replied to both.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- After more than a year of watching their league get picked apart, leaders of Big 12 Conference finally made a proactive move Thursday by voting to add TCU as early as next season.

It was the first aggressive act by a league desperate to secure its membership amid dramatic shifts in conference affiliation. And if the Horned Frogs join the Big 12, it would be another sharp blow to the Big East, which was expecting to welcome TCU next season.

Leadership is the key to what makes a group of people successful.

Without effective leadership, the group is bound for failure. An effective leader must power through adversity to make the group as successful as possible. Ole Miss is going through tough times right now. We will get through it if not for one reason: we have very capable leaders that know exactly what they are doing.

David Saunders, a former University of Mississippi assistant football coach, filed a notice of claim this summer against the university for a violation of contract and damages.

Saunders said he believes UM athletic director Pete Boone retaliated against him for his work with student athletes with learning disabilities. The former linebackers coach claims Boone violated the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. He is seeking damages for “anxiety, stress and lost income.”

Just this once I’m going to tell you a story in which everyone wins.

Last September, the University of California decided to cut four sports (baseball, men’s and women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse) due to insuffecient funding.

Ever since Colonel Reb was removed from the sidelines of University sporting events in 2003 the students at Ole Miss have been clamoring for a mascot to represent them.

In 2009, then Associated Student Body President Artair Rogers set in motion the idea of a new mascot for the University.

In 2010 13,310 alumni, faculty and students showed enough support for Rebel Black Bear that it was chosen to be the new mascot for Ole Miss. Only 3,366 students voted.

Rebel has already made two public appearances in hospitals outside of Oxford, and the black bear is set to be unveiled soon at the University of Mississippi, though Thompson would not release specifics.

Although the University has not announced a date yet, Thompson said he predicts Rebel will be seen on campus within the next few weeks.
