The Pro-Bono Initiative at the University of Mississippi Robert C. Khayat Law Center will provide free tax assistance to low-income residents of Lafayette County this tax season through the Free Assisted Self-Service Tax (FAST) program.

FAST offers services to those who have a household income less than $57,000.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze added a familiar name to his football staff Monday, as former Rebel player and assistant coach Matt Luke returns to Oxford as the offensive line coach. Barney Farrar has also been named Assistant Athletics Director for Community Relations.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze announced on Thursday the first additions to his Rebel football staff. Dave Wommack was named the Rebels’ defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Maurice Harris will serve as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Tom Allen will be the linebackers coach, and Chris Kiffin was named defensive line coach.

All four assistant coaches were members of Freeze’s staff at Arkansas State.

After arguably the worst season in school history, new head coach Hugh Freeze won the press conference and took the first step to rebuilding the football program and uniting the fan base.

 

After arguably the worst season in school history, new head coach Hugh Freeze won the press conference and took the first step to rebuilding the football program and uniting the fan base.

When reports started to surface, the reaction was mixed, but Freeze won over the capacity crowd at the Ford Center with his love and vision for Ole Miss, both delivered in a charismatic fashion.

A Mississippi native, inspirational leader and one of the nation’s top rising coaches, Hugh Freeze was the first choice to return championships to Ole Miss Football and will be introduced as the Rebels’ 37th head coach today at 2 p.m. CT at the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

The event is open to the public and will be streamed free online at OleMissSports.com.

The Student Programming Board will show that they take “the most wonderful time of the year” seriously.
A new event called Grand Ole Christmas, a night of Christmas fun, will be from 7-11 p.m. in the Student Union.
“We are excited to host our annual Christmas event again this year,” said Bradley Baker, coordinator of campus programming. “We hope that this event is entertaining for not only Ole Miss students but families in the community as well.”

The Oxford-Lafayette community will participate in Operation Christmas Child, a global Christmas project, for its 11th year, to collect 4,000 shoeboxes.

 

The Oxford-Lafayette community will participate in Operation Christmas Child, a global Christmas project, for its 11th year, to collect 4,000 shoeboxes.

Every November, millions of shoeboxes, filled with toys, hygiene items and school supplies, are collected to send to less-fortunate children all over the world.

For Oxford Relay Coordinator Mae Stone, this is more than a seasonal project. Stone collects items year-round in order to fill hundreds of boxes.

As soon as the Ole Miss head coaching position became open this past Monday, former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach’s name was quickly linked with the job, among other former and current head coaches and coordinators.

Currently an announcer and analyst for CBS Sports, Leach boasts 23 years of coaching experience, including an 84-43 record in 10 seasons as the Texas Tech head coach. He brought his patented “Air Raid” offense to Lubbock, and the Red Raiders never had a losing season, reached 10 straight bowl games and shared the Big 12 South Title in 2008.

When asked about the Ole Miss job, he said it would be a job that “anybody would be interested in.”

Oxford residents will soon have access to a state-of-the-art hospital. The North Mississippi installation of Baptist Memorial Hospital continues to finalize plans to build a new hospital within city limits. The site selection process is nearing its end as the number of potential sites is narrowed down.

One day after Athletics Director Pete Boone and Chancellor Dan Jones announced Houston Nutt’s tenure as Ole Miss head coach would end after this season’s Egg Bowl, some of the assistant coaches shared their thoughts on the turn of events.

“I was surprised and disappointed because I know the amount of time and effort that has been put into it, but, if you’ve been in the game long enough, you know these things happen,” Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said after practice Tuesday.

Only 19 vandalism cases were reported to the University Police Department during the football season.

 

With the end fall semester fast approaching and only two home games left in the season, it is safe to say the University of Mississippi campus has fared well this semester, as far as vandalism is concerned.

Only 19 vandalism cases were reported to the University Police Department during the football season. Most of these cases have taken place in or near the residence halls and Greek houses. The other common places for vandalism are the parking lots during football game weekends, UPD’s Crime Prevention Coordinator Thelma Curry said.

This Saturday, Ole Miss (2-6, 0-5 SEC) travels to Lexington in hopes of ending its 11-game Southeastern Conference losing streak with a win over the Kentucky Wildcats (3-5, 0-4 SEC).

Ole Miss leads the all-time series 27-13-1, including a 42-35 win in Oxford this past season.

While the Rebels prepare for the Wildcats, head coach Houston Nutt sees some similarities between his team and Kentucky.

Youth movement continues on defense

Heading into Saturday’s game against Kentucky, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt is inserting several freshmen into the starting lineup for the first time.

“I’m anxious to see it game time, but they are taking the game plan in and working hard,” Nutt said. “It’s like swimming, you’ve got to throw them in the water.”

While Ole Miss fell yet again Saturday, this time in a 29-24 loss to Arkansas, the Rebels’ starting quarterback Randall Mackey played the best he ever has in a Rebel uniform.

 

While Ole Miss fell yet again Saturday, this time in a 29-24 loss to Arkansas, the Rebels’ starting quarterback Randall Mackey played the best he ever has in a Rebel uniform.

The redshirt junior threw for 218 yards on 18 of 30 passing with two touchdowns while going for 30 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. He also, for the most part, avoided mistakes, taking just three sacks and throwing just one interception.

Coming off a deflating 52-7 loss to Alabama just a week ago, the Ole Miss Rebels (2-4, 0-3) look to bounce back this weekend against the visiting No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks (5-1, 1-1).
