Defensive Lineman Robert Nkemdiche

Nkemdiche is undoubtedly the top player in the state of Georgia and will most likely be ranked as the top player in the entire country in 2013. He stands at 6’5,” 271 pounds, and runs a 4.6 40-yard dash. He recorded 19 sacks and, on the other side of the ball, rushed for 528 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga. Nkemdiche is a physical freak who could play defensive end, defensive tackle or linebacker in a 3-4 scheme at the next level. While Alabama is thought to be his early leader, Ole Miss signed his older brother, Denzel, in the 2011 signing class.

Defensive ends:

Ole Miss recorded only 13 sacks defensively this season, partly due to injuries at the defensive end position. At one spot, senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett returned after tearing his ACL in 2010, but was slow returning to pre-injury form. Lockett finished the season with 33 tackles, but no sacks. At the other spot, senior Wayne Dorsey started the 2011 season playing great football. In the first six games of the season, he recorded 22 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks before breaking his arm against Alabama and missing the rest of the season. True freshman C.J. Johnson shifted down from linebacker to defensive end and played well down the stretch. He recorded nine tackles against Louisiana Tech and 10 tackles against Mississippi State. Junior Gerald Rivers finished with just 13 tackles, but also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Johnson and Rivers, along with sophomores Cameron Whigham and Carlos Thompson, among others give Ole Miss some potential next season at the position.

Sophomore Barry Brunetti rushes for 47 yards in the second quarter to help set up a junior Bryson Rose field goal before half time. Brunetti replaced junior Zack Stoudt at quarterback late in the first quarter. Brunetti had 15 carries for 74 along with  5 completions for 30 yards. The Rebels fall to 2-9 (0-7) with the 52-3 loss to LSU.

In a game that looked to be a huge mismatch in favor of LSU, the top-ranked Tigers (11-0, 7-0 SEC) dominated the Ole Miss Rebels (2-9, 0-7 SEC) from start to finish. The final count was 52-3, the largest margin of victory in the 100-year history of the Ole Miss-LSU rivalry and the Rebels’ worst loss since the 1974 season.

“They are a really good football team,” head coach Houston Nutt said. “But we helped them. We have to get ready for that last one (against Mississippi State). That’s the bottom line.”

This Saturday, Ole Miss (2-6, 0-5 SEC) travels to Lexington in hopes of ending its 11-game Southeastern Conference losing streak with a win over the Kentucky Wildcats (3-5, 0-4 SEC).

Ole Miss leads the all-time series 27-13-1, including a 42-35 win in Oxford this past season.

While the Rebels prepare for the Wildcats, head coach Houston Nutt sees some similarities between his team and Kentucky.

Youth movement continues on defense

Heading into Saturday’s game against Kentucky, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt is inserting several freshmen into the starting lineup for the first time.

“I’m anxious to see it game time, but they are taking the game plan in and working hard,” Nutt said. “It’s like swimming, you’ve got to throw them in the water.”

Despite a lackluster start to the Ole Miss football season, sophomore linebacker Mike Marry has given his all each and every play, even with a strained arch in his right foot.
The Clearwater, Fla., native wears a walking boot on his right foot for the first half of each gameweek to give his injury as much rest as possible before taking it off around Wednesday or Thursday to prepare for each Saturday’s game.

Austin Miller: Talk about the Alabama football season to this point. What are the Crimson Tide’s expectations going into this game and for the rest of the season?

October 10, 2011

As Ole Miss prepares to face its toughest test of the season with No. 2 Alabama rolling into town Saturday, much of the Rebels’ focus is on how to move the ball against a very good Crimson Tide defense.
Alabama comes into the game as the nation’s top scoring defense (7 points per game) and is also ranked No. 3 in the country in total defense (191.3 yards per game).

As Twitter usage becomes more widespread among student-athletes, athletic departments across the country are coming to an agreement — Twitter is the devil.

First banned last year at Boise State by head football coach Chris Petersen, several other programs around the country, including Kansas, South Carolina, St. John’s, Villanova and Mississippi State, have all decided to pull the plug on the social media website.

Nutt impressed with Vanderbilt’s 2-0 start

“Vanderbilt is a very good football team,” Nutt said. “They play extremely hard. We always catch them early when they are healthy, fast and confident.”

An improved defense for the Commodores

“Their defense is relentless and fast,” Nutt said.

When Ole Miss linebacker D.T. Shackelford arrived his freshman year, his goal was to become the type of player Patrick Willis was with the Rebels.

Willis, who is now in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, is considered by many to be the best linebacker in the NFL.

With the prospects in the 2012 recruiting class having completed summer camp season and starting their senior year, it’s time to take a look at how Ole Miss is doing so far for those 2012 prospects. Still was the first commitment the Rebels received for the 2012 class as he committed April 21. At his current size, he projects to play at guard at the next level and should be a good one. In addition to Ole Miss, Still claims offers from Tulane and Memphis.

The Rebels concluded their third practice of camp Monday evening — the first in shoulder pads.

Afterwards, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was impressed by his defense for the second day in a row.

“There is some intensity we are seeing at defense at times,” Nutt said. “Not all of the time, but at times. And I thought the defensive line moved around very well today."

Nutt called out several players on the defensive line and linebacker after practice.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After months of public nastiness and private negotiations, of court filings and rulings, of players and owners squabbling over more than $9 billion a year, NFL fans finally saw the handshake and heard the words they awaited: "Football's back."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith both used that phrase while standing shoulder-to-shoulder Monday, announcing their agreement on a 10-year deal to end the lockout that began in March.

With the prospects in the 2012 recruiting class halfway through the summer camp season, it’s time to take a look at the next incoming recruiting class. The Rebels have picked up seven commitments so far. Remember, these prospects cannot sign until National Signing Day in February 2012.

One of the more veteran units on the Ole Miss team in 2010, the 2011 Ole Miss defensive line is much smaller and less experienced than it was a year ago but enjoys a boost in the unit’s athleticism.

When Ole Miss entered spring practice, the linebacker group was the strong point of the Rebels defense and possibly the best unit on the team. However, spring was not kind to the Ole Miss linebacking corp and what was a sure thing has now turned into a question mark.

May 3, 2011

Linebacker C.J. Johnson is set to arrive at Ole Miss on May 30, and that date couldn’t come any sooner for Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and his staff.

The Rebel defense took a serious hit on April 11 when star linebacker and team leader D.T. Shackelford suffered a torn ACL during spring drills.

With Shackelford likely out for the fall, Johnson – the most coveted player in Mississippi for the class of 2012 – is expected to help fill Shackelford’s void.

Seattle:
Seattle had all the momentum in the world after sneaking into the playoffs and then defeating defending Super Bowl Champions the New Orleans Saints in the first round. However, if anything, their draft ruined that momentum and may have even set them back. Their major need going into the draft was a quarterback, and they passed on TCU quarterback Andy Dalton with the 25th pick in the first round to take Alabama offensive lineman James Carpenter.
