Following the assasination of the former Libyan president there are now calls for an investigation into his murder.

Few times throughout recorded history has one man been so hated by the people he ruled. However, it seems violent overthrow has become more common in recent decades, from Pahlavi in Iran to Hussein in Iraq, and most recently Gaddafi in Libya.

Most overthrows have a few things in common: a nation divided along ethnic or religious lines, a great divide between the leaders and the people, and masses incited to action.

Obama’s announcement is irrelevant for a reason – it’s too good to be true.

Here in Oxford, we’re stretched thin with events and activities vying for our time and attention.

Jerrell Powe just signed on to the onslaught of the Forward Rebels.

We’re more stressed out about midterms than Boone must be about his job, and apparently this thing called a “Green Fund” should be important to us, too.

If you’re not paying careful attention, you’d barely notice that Obama said he’s bringing our troops home from Iraq.

Graduate students from the University of Mississippi will take to the seas this spring to study the impact of the BP oil spill.

“The UM-led consortium, which includes scientists from 14 research institutions, will examine the effects of hydrocarbons on a deep-water ecosystem,” said Ray Highsmith, lead investigator on the study.

Changing your own oil is a dirty, time-consuming job. But it also gives you a sense of accomplishment and can sometimes be fun (A twelve-pack helps a little bit in the fun department). Not to mention that just about anybody is capable of doing it as well as it saves you a good amount of money.
So put on that T-shirt with the huge nacho stain, and be prepared to smell like a mechanic. But don’t worry; I will guide you through the whole process.

“Don’t Worry — We’ll Get More!” I saw this slogan on a poster in the 1993 movie “Super Mario Brothers.”

In the movie, a dystopian, fungus-infested Manhattan is ruled under the thumb of Dennis Hopper, who sees the city’s resources dwindling.

The poster in question promoted Dennis Hopper’s character, King Koopa, as an environmentalist whose solution to the problems facing his people is to find more.

Imagine the Magic School Bus. Now add a chicken coop, a garden and some blueberry bushes. While this bus doesn’t fly or travel through time, it does operate entirely on used vegetable oil and solar power.

That’s exactly what six recent graduates from the Mississippi School of Math and Science created with the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi.

As a lifetime .298 hitter who amassed 762 home runs, more than 500 stolen bases, and nearly 2,000 RBIs in his illustrious career, Barry Bonds was, arguably, one of the greatest hitters of all time.

But it is his involvement with BALCO rather than baseball that has forced Bonds back into the world of relevant headlines for the first time since 2007.

We’re all getting ready to head home (or wherever) for a week of sleeping or sand. Sadly, we’re all going to have to fill up our gas tanks as well.

“Sticker shock” is a colloquial expression that describes the astonishment upon seeing the price of a particular good.

Usually, it’s used in reference to sofas and cars, but today, it’s gasoline.

We have a finite amount of oil on this planet.

We have a finite amount of oil on this planet.

While many people may argue about how long we have until we run out, the fact still remains that one day, we will run out.

Actually, by the time oil supplies are “low,” prices will be so high that using petroleum for anything will be cost prohibitive.

In addition, we are currently seeing that the availability and price of oil is highly dependent on political stability in the countries and areas of the world where it is extracted.

Psychology is an extremely new field of science in comparison to its counterparts, and it has recently mapped out the ways in which humans will emotionally react to stimuli.

And where is this knowledge most being put to use? Where knowledge is always first put to use: how to make us spend more money.

1. We Really Don’t Like the Earth: Hey, remember that whole “unprecedented, horrific ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico” thing? Yeah, I sort of do too. I, like you, was pretty busy with getting prepped for Jersey Shore 2: Snooki 3D. We have priorities in America, people. Obviously, a problem we can’t see firsthand is not quite as real as the Tivo-ed Jersey Shore recap episode in front of us. And let’s face it, five thousand feet underwater is pretty hard to see. Unless you’re an oil-drenched fish.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated many cities on the Gulf coast in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. We all remember what happened; New Orleans was nearly destroyed and the cities along the coast were basically wiped off the map.

This is about the poor, defenseless sea animals of the Gulf: the sea turtles, the countless fish, shrimp and crustaceans, the sea gulls that fly about and yes, that yellow sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea.

If you have watched the news in the past month, you have assuredly seen the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you have watched the news in the past month, you have assuredly seen the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

This oil spill is the largest environmental disaster in American history.

It took me a little while to wrap my head around that concept.

We, as those living in Mississippi and the other Southern states, are directly impacted by this event.

Whereas the Exxon-Valdez used to be the oil spill most referenced, now the “BP oil spill” will continue to be something talked about for many years to come.
